Mercedes 190e W201 1992 not starting after battery change. Alarm is sounding.

I’m hoping for some help! I bought a merc 190e and the previous owner fitted a new battery, when the car is unlocked the alarm sounds. I put the key in the ignition and turn it, the alarm stops but the car does not start. I have to wait for the hazards to stop flashing then the car can start. Does anybody know what the problem could be? The car is absolutely spotless and has no other visible issues. Thank you in advance!

Finding the car

For those enthusiasts who know these cars better then me, what should I do when trying to find a car on Facebook marketplace. I will admit driving long distances to see a car only to be disappointed by condition is not very rewarding right now. I am not sure if it’s just a result of budget or living in the American Midwest where rust is a major issue, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to just want to find a reasonably priced w201 without any major issues. For my marketplace warriors, what would you all suggest I do to try and help the search along, or do I accept there is going to be a lot of shenanigans involved and a lot of time spent trying to find the one?

Jumping coolant gauge. Anyone had this issue?

I have this problem where the coolant temperature gauge is swinging wildly, even though the engine is not overheating. For the purposes of debugging, I have replaced the temperature sensor with a resistor, and as you can see on the video, it has no effect, so the issue is probably inside the instrument cluster. The ampmeter shows the current flowing through the "sensor". Has anyone had any experience with the insides of the coolant temperature gauge?

190E for 2k?

Hey all! First time here.

Been looking for a 190e for a hot minute, as I'm looking for a car with longevity that surpasses my now falling apart Honda Civic.

I've found a 190E 1.8 Manual (pretty much my ideal, couldn't really care how fast the thing is) 174k miles and it's priced at about £2,250. Jacking points have been welded, head gasket done, engine reassembled, all fluids done and a "general service" has been performed. Apparently it's been imported from Ireland so the history is a little limited.

Think I like the idea of a higher mileage car given the fact it's "proven" mechanically. All the other examples I'm looking at have nicer bodywork but have been garaged and barely driven the past 10 years.

Just wondered what this sub and all it's expertise thinks of the car, will probably go see it in the next week or so after asking for some photos of the underside. This thing is basically my dream daily so I want to do it right :)

Thanks all!! (Before anyone points it out I can see the small crack in the front grill)

Should I buy?

I’d like to know if a w201 with a rusted out jack point would be worth buying? While I can do a lot of the work myself I have never welded before and welding in a new jack point would be beyond my ability. The local euro car specialist without seeing the damage ball parked it around 2-4k to fix wanted to know what all of you though and when seen in person would that still be the case for price. I’ll include a photo as well. Thank you for your help!

YSR Coilovers For Sale

Set of Yellow Speed Racing "Super Low" W201 coilovers for sale.

Came halfway installed when I bought my 190. Don't want to go as low as these allow. They have been fully installed and one of the fronts has some scuffs on the lock rings, but they have zero driving miles on them.

Will ship anywhere in the continental US for $500!

Cylinder head

Hello to everyone!. I'm making an engine overhaul, convert to efi and polish but i have an issue about compression. Does anyone increase compression via head resurfacing? I'm plan to resurfacing in the machine shop about 1mm (yes, one milimeter). How did it go with that matter? I have a M102.963 (yes, from a w124 too)

Photo to not to be ignored.

Fan clutch problems

Hello guys,
My 190E 1.8 (M102) has an inoperative fan clutch…

The weird thing is, that it’s constantly engaged but doesn’t hold tight enough to cool down the engine sufficiently… In other words it’s sitting and rubbing on the pulley but can be stopped when engine temperatures are above normal…

Has anyone had this same issue before? I can’t really get around on what it can be caused by as the clutch should just have 2 working positions (free / engaged), but this is neither of them🤷‍♂️

Thank you for advice! 🤝

Mess in the coolant tank (M102 1.8)

Hey guys.
My M102 (190E 1.8) has this weird stuff in the coolant tank… No signs of coolant in the oil though…
I do have overheating issues as my fan clutch doesn’t work, however my friend has this exact mess in the tank while not having overheating issues at all…

The car has about 200 000Km

(By overheating I mean high engine temperatures but never 120°C+ (officially overheated by the gauge)… I have so far gotten to about 110/115°C max, although I know it’s not good, I have barely driven the car since it’s been doing this and these issues only arise at either very low speeds or highway speeds (gets to around 90-95°C at 150-160Km/h)

So anyways… Is my head gasket shut? 🥲

Need help with installing new radio

Hi all,

Picked up my w201 this week. The previous owner put in a new auto radio; but the front of it is not proper working. And the radio does not fit with the car.

So I ordered a new Blaupunkt radio, and wanted to install it.

I pulled the old one out; thought it would be click and go but yeah… that wasn’t.

I googled for a ISO connector and found a lot of options; but I have no idea what I’m looking for.

The pictures show the radio now and the new radio. Anyone who can guide me in the good direction?

Mercedes 190D – front suspension / tire rubbing issue

I recently bought a Mercedes 190D, and I’m having an issue with the front suspension.

When there are 4 people in the car, I can hear the impact/rubbing when the car goes over bumps or uneven sections of the road.

The noise seems to be coming from the front driver's side (first photo). I’ve attached photos of both sides for comparison

Could this be caused by worn-out shock absorbers or springs? Or is the car simply sitting too low?
Any advice on what I should check first would be appreciated.

Suspension

W201 190e
Standard front suspension setup is divorced, shock and spring separate, when installing non divorced coilovers such as the BC RACING BR series, do the front shock towers need to be reinforced? Or are they fine as they are?

Ignition lock broken?

so basically I just tried to change out my working, but old ignition lock. I put the key in position 1, put two stiffs in both holes and pulled on the key. The big black thing around the lock popped out and I felt that the lock was moving, but I couldn't fully get it out. After a long time pulling and trying I then turned the key to position 0 again to try again. But now I can't even get it to position 1 again and I think it's in a really weird situation where it's not fully out nor fully in so it's not working at all now but I can't get it out.

Help me make a right decision

So at this moment I have a few cars that have my interest.

  1. 190E 1.8 manual, SportLine with 456.000km from 1993. That is a lot; but the body have had a lot of work put in. A lot of things are being repaired or replaced, rust isn’t there. And the engine and everything is further in good condition. New breaks, good tires, new TuV, oil, filters etc complete done.

  2. A 190E with 320.000 km, new engine with 100.000 km less then the odo meter. Needs new front brakes and brake cables? I don’t know what the called in English.. so this one is running but needs a bit of work.

Is the the first one with that much km a problem? This one is the exact car I wanted for a long time; interior, color wheels etc everything as I have seen in my dreams😂 but I need clever decision .

Electrical issues

Hi,

So it’s been a few months that my 1986 190e has electrical issues.

It runs great but my windows sometimes won’t come up nor down, the little horn that triggers when you shut the car off doesn’t work everytime, my radio unit is stuck on calibration screen and radio withe noise witch is pretty annoying
I checked every fuses, tried to disconnect my battery to really drain every bit of juice and it keeps happening.
Can my OVP do that ? (Over voltage protection) I cleaned the contacts and checked the fuse, everything seems fine.
I’m kinda lost and the radio thing is driving me crazy

Thanks in advance
