Hockey stopping: struggling with basics
I played inline for a bunch of years and I'm looking to join the local beer league. I'm an ok ice skater and the nearest rink for public skating year round is 90 minutes away so getting practice in is not convenient.
So I've been watching a bunch of videos on how to hockey stop, starting with just standing and shaving the ice with your blade. Went to the rink today to try it out and I couldn't even do that. I just couldn't get it to move, it just seemed caught on the ice. The videos make it look effortless. Maybe I was putting too much weight on that skate?
I also tried snow plow stopping and it was sort of the same story. I never shaved the ice, it just tried to bring my feet together. I had my skates sharpened not long ago but I have no idea what depth they used (they never asked I wouldn't know what to ask for anyway).
