Pedal drama continues… need some recommendations 🤦‍♂️

So, update on the Big Jumper build…

Bike finally went together, then I get a phone call from the shop telling me the DMR Vaults - which are supposed to be 9/16” - won’t fit the Profile crank arms… which are also 9/16”. FFS 😂

Turns out there was an issue with the pedal axles. My pair, along with the other three pairs they had on the shelf, were all measured at around 0.5 mm larger than the correct 9/16” size. So it wasn’t the Profile crank arms after all.
They’ve now gone back and I’ve taken the full refund. At this point, I’m moving on from the Vaults altogether. FFS 🤦‍♂️

So… what pedals should I be looking at now?

This is a 26” S&M Big Jumper build - BMX/DJ/trails sort of use. I want something with some genuine BMX/DJ pedigree, preferably alloy, good platform and grip, but still with a fairly thin/clean profile. Not interested in big chunky plastic pedals.

I’m actually starting to think Title MTB pedals in matte black might be the answer. Super clean, understated and would suit the build without looking too busy.

Budget may as well be upto 350 AUD max, as ve already fkn spent it initially on the magnesium vaults anyway right but I’d rather not spend stupid money just for the sake of it.

What would you guys put on it? 👇

Build/parts update for the S&M BiG Jumper..

Every now and then you come across a component that’s been recommended for years.

The DMR Vault is one of those.

⚙️ DMR Vault SL Magnesium
⚖️ 318g on my scales 🤯

Huge platform. Incredible grip. Low-profile design that’s been proven for years.

The black magnesium body and gold titanium axle fit this build perfectly.

Can’t wait for those pins to tickle my shins. 🫣🤣🥴

Another piece locked in.

The BiG Jumper is getting very close now. 🤘🔥

The details make the difference.

It’s easy to admire a finished bike.

The fun is choosing every component that gets it there.

⚙️ Colony Blaster 25T
⚙️ Profile Ti spindle

One more step towards the S&M Big Jumper.

Just waiting on the Profile Gold BB...

Polished chrome. Timeless lines. Precision that’s earned its place for decades.

One more piece of the build locked in. 🔥

The Profile Gold BB is on its way.
The Colony Blaster sprocket and S&M seat clamp are incoming.
Brakes and pedals are next.

This build isn’t being rushed. Every component has a purpose.

S&M Big Jumper 26” (Satan Red) Build – Progress Update

Another step closer.

I hit a bit of a snag with the front end. My OCD kicked into overdrive when I realised I had to run a spacer between the headset and stem because the Deity Cavity 35mm stem was contacting the headset. I’ve always preferred the look of a slammed stem, so it just wasn’t sitting right with me. 🫣

Ended up swapping to an Odyssey Conical headset with the 12mm tapered dust cap, which I actually think suits the bike much better anyway.

The only catch was the S&M head tube uses a tapered lower, so the Odyssey lower bearing wouldn’t work. I ended up building a bit of a hybrid setup - Arise lower bearing, Odyssey upper bearing and conical dust cap.

Honestly… I think it was a blessing in disguise.

The front end now looks exactly how I wanted it to. The tapered dust cap flows nicely into the polished Deity stem, the stem sits properly without any ugly spacer stack, and the whole cockpit just looks finished.

Still on the shopping list:

Deity Crosshair Headset Top Cap (silver)
Profile Racing polished crank arms + Ti crank bolts
Colony Blaster 25T Sprocket
Shimano SLX rear brake (right-hand lever)
Deity Deftrap pedals

The Profile Ti spindle is already on its way from a mate in the States, so the finish line is getting closer.

It’s amazing how one small detail can completely change the look of a build. Glad I chased it instead of settling.

For Those Who Still Enjoy Reading Build Threads… 😈🔥

I don’t really take many riding videos and I’m usually pretty hopeless at stopping to take photos when I’m actually out riding, so I thought I’d share the story behind my latest build instead.

I was always into BMX when I was younger. Fast forward to now and somehow I’m 44 years old… where the fk that time went, I’ve got no idea. 🤣

Years ago I built up a Banshee Amp and absolutely loved it.

Then life happened.

I started my own business, along came our son, then our daughter, and before I knew it riding had taken a back seat to work, family and everything else that comes with being an adult.

The Amp slowly became something I looked at more than I rode.

Recently, I dragged it back out thinking I’d get it going again.

The reality was pretty fkn brutal!

The Profile crankset was pitted and rusty as hell, bearings throughout the bike had perished, and years of sitting hadn’t done it any favours.

Living on the Gold Coast certainly doesn’t help either. The salt air absolutely wreaks havoc on anything metal if it sits long enough.

Rather than keep throwing money at a bike that no longer suited what I wanted, I decided to part it out and start fresh.

Now my son is 9 years old and absolutely loving riding his BMX.

Watching him get into riding has reignited something in me and made me realise how much I missed it myself.

I wanted something that felt a little closer to my BMX roots.

Something I could cruise around with my son, hit the local pump track, roll around the BMX track and just enjoy riding again.

Enter the S&M BiG Jumper.

The build is still coming together, but the goal is simple:

Build a BMX-inspired 26” bike that’s fun, reliable and built to be ridden.
I’ll be the first to admit I’m not sending huge dirt jumps these days, so this build is definitely aimed more at pump tracks, BMX tracks and riding with my son than going full send.
That said, I’ve already caught myself eyeing off a set of S&M Pitchforks… 🤣🫣

For now though, the old SE Landing Gear fork is staying.
It’s recently been stripped, blasted and zinc primed - refurbished and powder-coated satin black, and at around 1.05kg it’s still pretty respectable by today’s standards.
We’ll see how it holds up before I start spending money I probably don’t need to. 🤨

Current Build List

• S&M Big Jumper 26” (Satan Red)

• SE Landing Gear Fork (refurbished & powder-coated black)

• Deity Highside Bars (80mm rise)

• Deity Cavity 35mm Polished Stem (just ordered this morning) 😈

• NS Rotary SS Wheelset
• DT Swiss Competition Spokes & Brass Nipples
• Titanium Axle Bolts

• Schwalbe Billy Bonkers 26x2.1

• Profile Racing Cranks (still need to order)

• Shimano XT Rear Brake (still need to order)

• SDG Bel-Air V3 Kevlar Saddle

One thing I have managed to save from a previous life is the old NS wheelset.

Built around NS Rotary SS hubs, DT Swiss Competition spokes and brass nipples, it’s a wheelset that’s been with me for a long time and has proven itself over the years.
It’s now wrapped in a fresh set of BILLY BONKERSSSSSSSS 🤣 and despite being well over a decade old, the complete wheelset including rotor still comes in at around 3.65kg.
Light enough to keep things lively but still strong as hell.
The wheelset and Landing Gear fork are about to start a whole new chapter beneath the Big Jumper, which makes this project even more satisfying.

Looking For Opinions

I’m always keen to hear people’s thoughts, especially if they’re constructive, so please feel free to comment and share your own builds.

Also keen to hear opinions on the parts I haven’t ordered yet.

Sprocket

I’ll be running a 10T rear and was planning on sticking with a 25T front, which is the same gearing I ran on my old Banshee Amp.

For those with more BMX experience:

Odyssey Boyd 25T?
Colony?

Something else entirely?

Brake Setup

I went down the rabbit hole pretty quickly.

Originally I thought a simple Shimano Deore rear brake would be more than enough.

I’ve always run mechanical brakes and honestly loved them.

But for this build I’m leaning towards a hydraulic setup.

XT or SLX?
Rear brake only.

2-piston only.

Would love to hear what people are running and whether XT is worth the extra money over SLX for this sort of bike.

Keen to see if there are any other BiG Jumper owners lurking around here, or anyone else still keeping the BMX-inspired 26” scene alive.

Sometimes the best builds aren’t about chasing the latest tech, the lightest weight or the biggest jumps.

Sometimes they’re simply about reconnecting with what got you into bikes in the first place.

26 ain’t dead. 🤘😈🔥
