I have been doing my Erasmus semester in Seville since the end of January and I live in a shared apartment with 4 people on the ground floor (yes, I know now that this probably was not the smartest idea). At the beginning, we only found a few cockroaches in the common areas and it was still manageable. My fear really started when one literally fell onto me through the window, even though I have mosquito nets installed.
Since around March, it has become really bad. We see around 4–6 cockroaches per day. When we cleaned the kitchen, we found three old traps underneath the kitchen unit containing almost 50 dead cockroaches, probably left there by previous tenants. Our landlord assured us that this is “normal” in southern Spain. I understand that cockroaches can exist here, but 4–6 a day cannot possibly be considered normal.
I tried explaining to him that we also have many very small cockroaches, which usually indicates a much larger infestation and possibly a nest somewhere in the building. He sent someone who briefly sprayed parts of the kitchen and placed a few traps, but unfortunately it only helped for about two days.
One night when I came home late, I saw a cockroach crawling on my roommate’s door. And now comes the highlight: my girlfriend is visiting me here, and at 5 a.m. she woke up screaming because there was a cockroach crawling on her while she was sleeping. After I caught it and we tried to go back to sleep around 6 a.m., we found another one underneath the wardrobe.
So my question is: how normal is this REALLY in this extent? What do people in Spain usually do against this? How can I get out of my rental contract?
I pay €450 for a tiny apartment shared with three other roommates. I honestly feel like the landlord is just trying to delay everything until we leave. There are also several holes and openings in the apartment, for example behind the kitchen unit and behind my air conditioning. Isn’t the landlord obligated to seal those kinds of openings in a situation like this?
I am genuinely very desperate because I do not really know anyone here who could help me, and I am still learning the language. I already contacted my Spanish law professor and asked her for advice. Maybe some of you can help me as well.

Estoy haciendo mi Erasmus en Sevilla desde finales de enero y vivo en un piso compartido de 4 personas en un bajo (sí, ahora sé que probablemente no fue la mejor idea). Al principio solo encontrábamos algunas cucarachas en las zonas comunes y todavía era algo soportable. Mi miedo empezó realmente cuando una cayó directamente sobre mí desde la ventana, aunque tengo mosquiteras instaladas.
Desde aproximadamente marzo la situación se ha vuelto realmente muy mala: vemos entre 4 y 6 cucarachas al día. Cuando limpiamos la cocina, encontramos debajo del mueble de la cocina tres trampas antiguas con casi 50 cucarachas muertas, probablemente dejadas por los antiguos inquilinos. Nuestro casero nos aseguró que esto era “normal” en el sur de España. Entiendo que pueda haber cucarachas aquí, pero ver entre 4 y 6 al día no puede considerarse normal.
Intenté explicarle que también tenemos muchas cucarachas pequeñas, lo cual normalmente es señal de una infestación mucho mayor e incluso de un posible nido en alguna parte del edificio. Envió a alguien que fumigó un poco la cocina y colocó algunas trampas, pero lamentablemente solo ayudó durante unos dos días.
Una noche, cuando llegué tarde a casa, vi una cucaracha caminando por la puerta de mi compañera de piso. Y ahora viene lo peor: mi amiga está aquí de visita y a las 5 de la mañana se despertó gritando porque tenía una cucaracha encima mientras dormía. Después de atraparla e intentar volver a dormir alrededor de las 6 de la mañana, encontramos otra debajo del armario.
Entonces mi pregunta es: ¿hasta qué punto es realmente normal esto en España? ¿Qué suele hacer la gente aquí contra este tipo de problemas? ¿Cómo puedo salir de mi contrato de alquiler?
Pago 450 € por un piso diminuto compartido con otras tres compañeras. Sinceramente, siento que el casero solo está intentando ganar tiempo hasta que nos vayamos. Además, hay varios agujeros y aberturas en el piso, por ejemplo detrás del mueble de la cocina y detrás del aire acondicionado. ¿No está el propietario obligado a cerrar este tipo de aberturas en una situación así?
