r/Erasmus

Hi

I’m a 19 year old marketing student from Ukraine, and I’ll be going on Erasmus exchange soon.
If you’ve been on Erasmus exchange before, what advice would you give? I’d really appreciate any
tips.
I’m also looking for someone around my age to practice English speaking with.
Thanks! :)

Does Erasmus have an age cap?

I have been considering Erasmus for years but I had to press pause on it due to personal circumstances. Now, I want to study again but I am no in my mid-30s. I am unsure if I will still be able to even apply to any program? Your insight would be very much appreciated.

Erasmus nightlife is way harder than I expected

I am on Erasmus Spain and honestly struglging with the nightlife. I love it here and met amazing people but everyone starts drinking late and dont even go to the club until around 1:30 AM.

Back home nights end before people here even leave the house. I keep getting FOMO because it feels like I am missing the real Erasmus experience, but I just cant stay out that late. On a recent trip, everyone wanted to party while I got up early and explored the city by myself. I had a great time, but my friends said I am wasting my 20s by going home early instead of clubbing.

Has anyone else felt like this?

Erasmus at Istanbul Bilgi University accommodation advice?

Hi everyone!
I’m a 21 year old male student from Lisbon Portugal, and I’ll be spending the fall semester at Istanbul Bilgi University, mainly at the santralistanbul campus as an erasmus student.
I’m currently trying to figure out accommodation and I’d really appreciate advice from current/former Bilgi students, erasmus students, or locals.
I have a few questions:

-Would you recommend a shared apartment or a student residence? What are the pros and cons of each in Istanbul?

-Which neighbourhoods would you recommend for someone studying at santral campus? I’d like a good balance between commuting to university and having an active social life.

-Are there any areas I should avoid, either because they’re unsafe or simply inconvenient for students?

-What are the best websites, facebook groups, WhatsApp groups, or other platforms to find reliable accommodation?

-Are there any student residences that you would particularly recommend (or avoid)?

-Is it better to book something before arriving, or stay in a hostel/Airbnb for a week and look for accommodation once I’m in Istanbul?

-How much should I realistically expect to pay for a decent room in a shared flat?

Finally, if you have any general tips for someone moving to Istanbul for erasmus (transport, scams, things you wish you had known before arriving, etc.), I’d love to hear them!
Thanks a lot in advance. Looking forward to experiencing Istanbul!

A learning agreement issue

Hello, everyone! I have a question related to the learning agreement for my exchange (I am a CEEPUS Freemover, but I suppose it's the same). There are 5 subjects at my home university that I've found the equivalents to at the host university, the thing is that one of them is done at a year above mine ( I will be doing my 4th semester, while this subject is taught at 6th semester for the students there). So my question is whether this is possible to do, will I have any trouble with it, or is it even allowed? Thank you :)

Hello community

I'm trying to get an erasmus+ internship in Belgium, I've sent emails to different universities, the common thing is that I have to find a professor that's willing to supervise me first, I've been contacting professors but ́ost of them do not respond.

Any idea on whom to contact please?

I don't know if I should bail out

This might be an odd post, but I got selected for a semester at UCLouvain, and I don't even think I want to go. I am currently studying in a city 5 hours away from my hometown, which I've always hated, and I am incredibly happy in this new city, which is also the capital. I also live in a dorm and have plenty of friends. I'd like to stay with them the entire year and not miss anything. Besides, I'm into theatre, and if I returned in January, I think I'd miss a lot of plays and opportunities to be part of. I am afraid that Erasmus will make me very isolated, since I'm very introverted and don't enjoy partying at all. Does anyone else have these doubts, or could anyone please offer me some advice? My parents never share their insights with me; no adult ever helps me, and I'm very lost.

Is Erasmus that easy? Not for me certainly!

I see many posts about people talking about choosing destinations, or rejecting Erasmus, or finding roommates, or finding places to live while being selected for Erasmus. Is it that easy to get selected for Erasmus?

I tried my level best for one of the programs of my interest end failed to get selected. I really want to get selected to a program, where to start? What to do? I've zero guidance at all. Is it just me?

Thinking about rejecting Erasmus

I was accepted for the Erasmus program quite a while ago, but due to personal circumstances and lower-than-expected funding, I am seriously considering turning it down, even though I’m only about two months away from flying out (I’ve already booked the flight and accommodation for nine months).

I was expecting significantly more funding; the amounts were released today, and it is far less than I anticipated because I wasn't granted the "student with fewer opportunities" status. This means I’ll have to dip into my savings and money from home. Should I turn it down? I’ve already emailed my university’s International Relations Office, but the situation looks pretty bleak.

Could someone advise me on what to do or what other financial aid to look for? (I am from Andalusia.)

Should I stay for summer after my exchange or go back home?

Over the past year I have build my life on Erasmus and now that the inevitable end is coming to an end I very hesitant to let it all go and I am clinging for as long as I can.

My initial plan was to get a summer internship (didn’t work out), plan B was to get a bartending job (didn’t work out) and now I am facing the decision. Do I go back home and work the same job I did as before or maybe get some freelance gigs. Or stay here after my exchange and prolong the inevitable.

The thing is like 90% of my Erasmus friends will leave, I still have my classmates but they are back at their parents and live away or don’t have as much time to do stuff. And maybe most importantly I have a relationship which I want to enjoy as much as possible before it ends.

STAYING FOR THE SUMMER

PROS:

- More time to enjoy the relationship (mosty weekends anyway tho)
- pleasant creative and international environment
- Chill maybe even too lazy summer

CONS:

- Expensive
- Unstable source of income
- Waaaaay less friends
- My parents would prefer that I come home (sad parents)
- I dont feel the drive to stay here as much as I did when I still attended uni

GOING BACK HOME:

PROS:

- Transition period before going back to my home uni
- Same summer job = stable income (it’s nice, pleasant people, but really hard work in construction, sometimes 12 hour workdays, doesn’t even pay that much)
- Cheaper life (at my parents)

CONS:

- No relationship
- Same old

Enjoying Sumer back home (I can do that every summer I suppose) and I’ll never have an Erasmus summer like this again. If it weren’t for the relationship I would go home after July, but now I am considering staying for August as well.

Erasmus Bucharest 2026-2027

Hi everyone,
I just got accepted for an Erasmus exchange at the Romanian-American University in Bucharest for my final semester (2026–2027). I’ll be studying International Business in English, and I also received a scholarship of 5107 EUR for the whole period (~4.5 months). Dorm accommodation is provided.
Honestly, I’m really excited but also kinda nervous and doubting myself. I’m worried I might not handle the studies well, especially because everything will be in English and it’s a new environment for me.
I also wanted to ask if anyone has experience living in Bucharest — do you think 5100 EUR is enough for basic living (food, transport, personal expenses) if accommodation is already covered?
And overall… would you recommend going on Erasmus even if you feel unsure at the beginning?
Thanks in advance for any advice 🙏

how do you finance your Erasmus?

I'm going abroad for my erasmus later this year.

I know there is this Erasmus funding from university but I'm on the waiting list there and they told me the chances of me receiving those funds are low.

I will most likely get some support from the state since I'm from a low income family but I genuinely don't know what else to do. I saved up so I think I'm good but I'm still scared I will struggle since I'm going to Sweden, which isn't too cheap.

I already got the cheapest accommodation I could find (cheapest student dorm room they offered) and plan to eat out as rarely as possible but I do also want to enjoy my time there. plus I feel like a laptop would make things a lot easier over there and as of right now I don't own one. I have a very old one but since it was a super cheap one it's no good anymore so I'd rather buy one that's better but those would be a bit more expensive (I'd still get the cheapest I could find that's good)

idk, how do you guys do it? any tips?

Would you choose €3,600 more or 3 months Internship in Athens🇬🇷? I can’t decide

Hi everyone,

I can’t decide between two opportunities.

Option 1: A full time paid IT Support internship in Athens (August–November) with 3 days home-office per week. I’d lose about €3,600 compared to the job which I would do staying in Germany, but I’d get to live abroad, meet new people and have another international experience.

Option 2: A working student job (a couple hours a week) in Germany. Better for my CV, 3,600€ overall more money, and maybe I could still do a 6-month internship abroad next year before starting my Master’s in my Gap Year.

I’m especially worried that if I stay in Germany, I’ll spend another autumn with bad weather mostly with the same people and regret not moving to Athens - I have nothing to do except the couple hours of work since I finished my studies.

On the other hand, I’m worried I’ll regret giving up the money and career opportunity and that I will not meet people in Athens there because it’s a small company.

What would you choose? Why?

Surfing, Partying and Studying in Lisbon

Hi everyone!
This September I’ll be moving to Lisbon for an Erasmus exchange, and I’m looking for some tips about living there.
My main goal is to surf as much as possible, although I’ll also be attending classes at NOVA FCT. I’d love to find a good balance between surfing, university, and experiencing Lisbon’s nightlife.
Do you have any recommendations on the best areas to live, how to get around, surf spots, nightlife, or anything else you think I should know? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

anxiety post erasmus

I just got back from my Erasmus in Belgium and they were NOT kidding about feeling bad after Erasmus. It's been one day and I am already feeling super anxious, I'm being hit by all the responsibilities (I have to take 4 exams in my country now) and even though my Erasmus wasn't perfect and I just had a super intense exam session there, I'm already missing the general feeling of calmness I used to have. Oh well, hope it gets better

The 5 Stages of Every Erasmus Student

Day 1: 🌍
"I'm going to fully immerse myself in the local culture."

Week 2: 🛒
The cashier at the supermarket already recognizes you.

Month 1: 🏡
"This city actually feels like home."

Month 2: ✈️
When you visit your home country, you accidentally call your Erasmus city "home."

Last Week: 📦
You seriously consider taking that €8 IKEA lamp back in your suitcase.

Last Day: 😭
You're crying while saying goodbye to people you didn't even know existed a few months ago.

Erasmus is probably the only time in your life when a shared kitchen with 8 strangers somehow becomes one of your favorite places.

What's the most unexpected thing you got emotionally attached to during your Erasmus?

Self funded emjm

Is self funded EMJM (mipdal) worth it for a non-EU?
It is comparatively cheaper for me than other specific university masters program that I got in. One gives me a direct visa pathway other gives me a cheaper master’s and an option to come back without much financial burden if I’ve to. I’m torn between logical future and easy on pocket path.

erasmus accomodation

Hello!

I'm moving to prague this September for Erasmus during the winter semester and I'm struggling to find accomodation.

I've decided I won't be using the university dorms because they do not offer single rooms for erasmus students and for personal reasons I need one. I tried erasmusplay.com but anything that's near the city centre is 700euros+ per month. My budget is 650.

I've been thinking about studentrepublic.cz, specifically the Tesla Residence. Does anyone know anything about it?

Is it worth staying in the centre (ex. Vinohrady)? Being close to the university and all sounds ideal but I am scared that most erasmus students will be at the universities dorms or in other areas like Holešovice.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm trying to find a dorm that will also have erasmus students since it makes socializing easier.

Thank youu
