Not my style, but optimistic!
Hey guys! BoC is easily a top 5 favorite artist of mine and I am ecstatic to see how much all of you are loving the new single and the community hype around the album.
I pre-ordered the deluxe vinyl and anticipate its arrival!
With that out of the way, and only with love I ask:
Is there any silent voices out there who just dont vibe with Prophecy at all? I have no interest in rage baiting, I just feel this need to find some discussion and community with people who share this feeling just as those who are enjoying it have.
I will never ask—nor expect—an artist to stay the same. As a musician with many years under my belt, there is nothing that rubs me the wrong way than listeners who think they are entitled to ask anything of a band’s direction. In fact, I am very happy for the brothers choice to continue changing and believe they have every right to do so.
That said, this might be where some of my feelings bristle with the subreddit, but please believe me when I say I have no intention of being intentionally divisive or inflammatory. Any instance of this would be a failure of my communications and intentions.
Previous releases of theirs have always had this elusive, subtle, unnameable quality about them that you really couldn’t put your finger on or language to. It was just this feeling, and I wont try to out words to it cause you guys already know. This is what I would call their”BoC DNA”
Prophecy really doesn’t illicit this feeling for me at all, in fact it feels like I can somewhat easily lump it amongst bands like Survive and the member’s Stranger Things soundtrack. Not specifically Stranger Things, but amongst that 80’s revisionist thing.
I dont find as much BoC DNA lingering in this as other tracks of theirs. (Trust me the irony of that statement is not lost on me given its literally BoC who created the track, please be patient w me I love u guys )
I am on the spectrum and have a bunch of music production “icks” if you will, that are completely baseless and arbitrary, but this track hits so many of them for me.
Particularly the chorus electric guitar in an almost rock styling; the drum production from root to branch is not my cup of tea, and the Optimus Prime voice really makes me cringe. The voice one is particularly odd to me because it comes so so close to things like Telepath and Beware The Friendly Stranger where they do similarly forward vocal edits, but this one feels like subtlety was completely lost. (Again which is fine they dont owe me anything I am just analyzing for myself cause I have to get this out of me)
Returning to my earlier statements, I would never ever ask them to make Geogaddi again or MHTRTC again or anything like that. If anything I encourage them to continue evolving despite my taste, and support it even if I dont like it.
Sometimes it feels like raw hype when people say this is amongst their best stuff, I just cant wrap my head around that. (But it might be my autism)
I know there are going to be other tracks on this that blow me away and I remain optimistic!!
But can I find anyone who is willing do comment on this feeling where we might discuss?
