PURPOSE:

* Emergency prep and backup communication.

Nearest repeater is 17 miles away (myGMRS.com says it has a 25-mile range). I can kinda hear others on the repeater using my HA1G, but it's pretty much static.

I'll mostly keep it at home as a base station. I may or may not take it in a backpack to a mountaintop to test the range.

What channel to use for best chances of first contact?

I heard 20 is the unofficial "emergency channel," but I also heard it described as the unofficial meet-up channel?

I heard 16 is also good?

Beginner: Was gifted a 2-pack Midland GXT1000VP4 set. Any good?

Midland GXT1000VP4 GMRS Two-Way Radio (50 Channel, Long Range, 142 Privacy Codes, SOS, NOAA, Rechargeable Nickel Battery, Black/Silver 2-Pack)

Just wondering if I need a GMRS license to use these or if they're regular, unlicensed Walkie Talkies?

What's your general review of these?
