What compels you to get a mobile/basestation when FCC mandates restrictions that handhelds don't have?

I was looking at reviews for mobile systems for my vehicle, but they often point out that the FCC restricts them from using several channels.

What's the deal with that? And why might I still want one anyway?

My GMRS base station

I finally got my base station mostly the way I want it. A DB20 mounted to an eco flow power supply. It runs for about 3 days without power, but it also can take solar. Mobile and base station antenna options, programmed with about 6 localish repeaters.

I could go for more power possibly, but this is hitting repeaters 25-30 miles away so I don't see a point in giving up battery life for range I don't really need. My car has a more or less identical setup with a different antenna, and I have two handheld GM30's :)

Can anyone suggest how to fix this issue? walkies won’t connect unless they are on different channels

These worked great until about a week ago, I could not get them to communicate on the same channel. After every trouble shooting option I could find I left one walkie on a channel and held to PTT button while I put the other in scan mode, they will transmit to one another when on different channels but it is just extreme static…any help is appreciated

I am stupid and I need help.

Recently got these radios from a friend, and I'm trying to get them to talk to each other. I'd like to know how to talk to the far right radios, as I have more of them. The Baofengs will come up with the 462.650 frequency on them, but they still won't talk to each other.

Any advice on this?

Help would be appreciated.

Do I need more watts in a handheld?

I'm new to GMRS, still awaiting arrival of my license/call sign. But I'm not completely new to radio communication, just THIS. Trying to figure out my first radio purchase.

I want a handheld to start. Will get a mobile/base setup in a few months. We have a localish network in the works, mostly inspired by the almost total loss of communications our region had after Helene. A couple repeaters thus far in our area with hopes of more being added.

Terrain is mountainous. I'm at a somewhat lower elevation due to being in a river valley, though still mountains. I know line of sight really matters with these radios and there's not much of that here. I anticipate wanting to program in multiple repeaters. I'm not afraid of technology so programming doesn't scare me.

I prefer to pay for quality and dependability, one good radio vs 5 toys. I think I would like batteries that can be charged separately from the radio, if that's a thing. I had that with my emergency services radio. I see that most handhelds are 5 watts, but should I go for 10 (or more, is that available in a HH?) because of the terrain challenges here? If so, recommendations?

Thanks!

Would an older Midland MXT be a good starter radio, or should I look elsewhere?

I know these models are narrowband only would that be an issue in a mostly flat area that’s moderately wooded with pine trees?

Genuine question about the public net on midland radios

I have a genuine question about police radios cross-interfering with two of the channels on my Midland T50 series, i think specifically the t51vp with a 28 mile radius, the physical and online manual doesn't say anything about official emergency channels

MXT575 is dead?

My 575 appears dead. Haven’t used it in about 6 weeks, went to hook it up and it won’t power on. Fuse is good, power is good, and I tried doing a factory reset on the handset and I can get this code to come up but nothing else. I took the board out and saw nothing super obviously broken / scorched.

Is GMRS worth it

Looking at picking up a couple of radios for me and my wife to use while helping at a summer camp this year. It has a few small hills (maximum elevation change of 10ft) and is wooded. Have been mainly considering the GM-30 and the TD-H3 but was wondering if they are worth getting over a FRS HT? The longest shot across the camp would be about half a mile maybe a little more but in addition to trees there are some buildings. If the GMRS is definitely the way to go which of the two would you pick? And if FRS is the way to go does it really matter what I get or are they for the most part the same.

Can concert venues/music festivals use FRS/GMRS frequencies?

I'm out at a music festival and I brought my radios because its field day on Saturday. I have the GMRS frequencies programmed into my HT so can scan them and listen and im hearing the staff for this festival on at least 2 different frequencies and they are most likely using FRS because I am not receiving them great on the edge of the campground.

Is it legal for them to be using those frequencies as a business?

New and getting license soon.

My family and I are moving from Colorado to Arizona this time next year. I'm looking for a good vehicle unit(or base) that is low enough in power to use the cigarette lighter in our vehicles. (I'm aware that wiring is better but the wife wants cheap) it just needs some decent range with some mag mount antennas (flex cables to) we plan on also renting a box truck so we can wire that up. Is midland decent?

Has anyone had any luck programming baofeng GT-18 (T-18?) frs radios?

I recently purchased a set of 4 of these FRS radios for each of my kids to communicate with when we go camping. I cannot get any of my computers to read or write to these radios. I have tried chirp on 4 different computers(MacOS intel/apple, Linux, and windows) using just about every radio profile(I did see that retevis 618 is the recommended profile as well as baofeng 888. I tried the baofeng software, i have tried the wireless programming adapter, i have tried 3 different programming cables. All my other radios (4x ICOM, 2x TID H3, 8 x Baofeng) all program with out any issues but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to program these FRS radios and it’s driving me insane!!!

How to start

Don’t know what I don’t know. Wasn’t too sure how to ask but I wanted to get a setup for my truck and my garage. Anyone have any tips or suggestions for setting something like that up? Not too sure how to go about it. Looking into brackets for mounting right now but that’s as far as I know. Any help appreciated.
