Beginner's set of chisels

I want to pick up a lathe from Craigslist (Excelsior MC1018, a 10"x18" benchtop lathe) and it will need some chisels. What do you recommend?

Remote monitoring for OmniPod

Is there an iPhone app to remotely monitor the OmniPod? I am so frustrated that my wife, school nurse and I aren't informed when our son's OmniPod is nearly empty, has not completed a bolus, has expired, silently switches into into manual mode, or we're guessing how much time remains for a pod's 3 day life.

Has Insulet shown any sign of addressing this problem?

Work around for Mint home internet

My wife and I have been mint mobile customers for years, and the service is perfect: inexpensive, reliable, and I can pay for a year at once and not worry about a bill for 11 months. I want to sign up for their cellular-based home internet service, but it is somehow mysteriously not available in the same city where we use our cell phones. I even emailed mint suggesting they add home internet service to my account and was told they’d let me know when it’s available in our area. So what I’d like to do is repurpose an old iPhone that is possibly used with a travel router. I’d use the mint app on the phone so see how much data I’m using in a day so I can prevent throttling before I go over my monthly allotment. To date, I’ve never exceed my monthly allotment when using my cell phone.

I don’t have a way to measure what how much data we use with our current home internet access, but as we don’t watch a lot of TV I imagine it’s well below 20GB/month.

Has anyone tried this?

Simplest GMRS radio

I want a wearable, GMRS radio my sons and I can wear as we ride our bikes around town. I want them to keep their hands on the handlebars so a handlebar-mounted wireless PTT would be ideal, and VOX if this is not available. VOX concerns me as wind noise might constantly cause both radios to transmit, so I need to know if anyone has experience with VOX radios. I also want radios where I can lockout the controls to prevent accidental changes during use. We’re just chatting about which way to turn, no need to change channels, fiddle with PL tones, etc.

Based on your own experience, what do you recommend?

How to make a 12v to 16v boost converter

I’d like to make a 12v (13.8v actual) to 16v boost converter so I can charge my battery while driving. On the input end would be a cigarette lighter style plug and the other end would be PowerPoles. The output would feed a charge controller which in turn would feed the battery.

To prevent accidentally draining my vehicle’s battery I want it to work at 13.8v input, but not 12v.
Is there a kit I could use to make my own? Would it comparable to a ready to use

Charge LiFePo4 battery WITHOUT charge controller

I just received a new 40 Ah battery and it came with a Full Power CGSW90A-150-6000II switching power supply. Though I can physically plug the power supply directly into the battery, everything I know about charging a battery tells me a charge controller needs to go between the 2.

If I were to connect the 2 what would happen?

In praise of Bioenno battery replacement procedure

I own 2 Bioenno batteries: a BLF-1220A  (20 Ah) and a BLF-1240A (40 Ah). The smaller battery was my first purchase for ham radio and powered by 100W HF radio. Shortly after I bought the battery, I was using it to power my video camera for a work-related video when it dropped about 2 feet onto a concrete driveway. Dang! A new toy is broken and only I am to blame. The black plastic wrapping was cracked and it’s been slowly widening over the years. It’s probably safe to use, but I can’t prove it. So, I inquired about repair – not a warranty claim. They offered to replace it for free, no need to provide proof of purchase, etc. Fantastic, but I’m just not one to hold a company responsible for my clumsiness so I didn’t take them up on the offer, so I didn’t get back to them

About a month later a friend gave me almost all her used radio equipment which included the larger battery. Score! A free replacement with twice the capacity, but it had an intermittently faulty lead. Sometimes the battery powered a day of fun, other times charging through the night led to a battery with no additional charge. Great, now I have a battery that might be covered by a warranty, but only for the original owner.

With 2 batteries that need either repair or replacement, I’m in a tight spot: replacement for both is expensive and repair will involve shipping in both directions plus price for the repair. I don’t have any other source of power and I’m thinking it’s time to buy a new, smaller battery which for this summer is another expense I can’t afford.

I emailed Bioenno and inquired about repair both figuring it would be cheaper than replacement and I don’t like the idea of casting aside 2 batteries that could probably be easily repaired.

So, I emailed Bioenno and offered to ship both batteries if they could give me a price for repair.

Their response? They need my mailing address and serial number for the larger battery -- that’s it. No proof or purchase to determine warranty period, no matching the original owner’s name against mine, no deposit to cover the battery to be repaired or swapped for a new battery, or anything else that might prevent a replacement being shipped to me for reasons related to abuse or neglect of the battery.

What was the result? A new 40 Ah battery, AC charger and an SB50 to PP45 adapter.

Except for, say, Rolls Royce (which famously flies a mechanic to you for repair of your hand-built car), I don’t know of a company that offers this quality of customer service. Because of this I am a lifelong customer, and will sing their praises to anyone who will listen.

Loan payment with down, rate, term, additional payment

It's time I showed my son how loans work with compound interest, varying down payments, interest rates, loan terms and accelerating the loan with increased monthly additional payments or additional payments, and most importantly how much money is spent on interest over the life of the loan. I've downloaded a few example spreadsheets, but nothing check all the boxes.

I also remember in college a math teacher showing how much money could be saved just by making 2 payments a month -- $500 twice per month instead of $1000 once a month. I guess this would be 24 payments per year, but not sure if the spreadsheet would figure that out.

I’m especially interested in one that has a table for every payment that shows amount of principle and interest for each month, and how as the loan progresses the amount of principle paid increases and the amount of interest decreases thus showing how a loan is “front loaded”.

Has anyone created such a spreadsheet or could point me to one I could download?

Type of connector cable for Icom IC-2730 controller

The cable between the body of the IC-2730 and the controller appears to be an ordinary phone line that would allow a desk phone to be connected to the wall jack. Is it a RJ-11? If so, would a 6P2C connector work?

List of crossband repeat capable mobile and handheld radios

Based on my earlier post, this is what I have seen mentioned in comments as out of the box crossband repeat capable radios. There is no point in making my own repeater when so many ready-made solutions exist. What other radios would you recommend as crossband repeaters?

·       TYT-8000d

·       Radtel 950 pro

·       Icom IC-2730 (the one I use in my truck)

Ideas for a super simple repeater

I'd like to know what it takes to make a portable repeater -- something small enough to put into a Pelican case and chain to a tree that is not visible from the trail, road, etc for the day.

I imagine 2 HTs each with a external antenna on the end of a feedline placed 2 meters apart and hanging from a tree branch. The speaker output for each HT is connected directly to the microphone input of the other HT. VOX is used to sidestep the need for an electronically triggered PTT. Fully charged battery packs for each radio as well as an external battery. A thermostat-driven fan to move hot air out of a vent.

What are you thoughts, recommendations?

Conditional creation of a PDF

I have a spreadsheet for my business that does 2 things: it records a customer's name, address, email and distance to the jobsite, common to all the bids and creates 1-4 bids depending on the details entered. Most of the time I create 1 bid for the customer and using VBA code I create a new email with the customer’s email address, attach the PDF of the bid, write the body of the email and have Outlook await my approval before sending the bid. However, when I create 2-3 bids for a customer, I use separate VBA code that does all the above but also attaches a bid for all 4 of the services I offer, whether or not there is a reason to do. For example, if a customer wants a bid for washing windows and solar panels, but not cleaning rain gutters or pressure washing their driveway, the VBA code still creates PDF bids for the gutters and driveway bids, even though I haven’t entered any details about these jobs. I tried to solve this problem by having the 4 sheets dedicated to the bids set the value of a Named Cell to “No” if, say, the rain gutter cleaning bid included 0 feet of rain gutters to be cleaned -- thus no work to be done and no need to create a PDF of the bid. Conversely, a window washing bid would be created if more than 0 windows are          included in the bid. So, for each of the bids there is a named cell called Make_Window_Bid, Make Gutter_Bid, Make_Solar_Bid or Make_Pressure_Bid that VBA code could check to determine if a PDF needs to be created. However, I’m much better with Excel formulas than I am with VBA code and I can’t quite figure out how to do and “if…then” statement in VBA.

[EXCEL, OUTLOOK] Default address not used when using VBA to send Excel PDF using Outlook

I have 3 email accounts: 1 for each of my 2 businesses and 1 for personal use. I have the default email address set to my older business email address, but when I send an email using this VBA code it sends an email including part of a spreadsheet saved as a PDF from my personal account. This wasn't a problem 2 months ago and I haven't changed anything with Outlook, Excel or my VBA code. I wonder if this is part of Microsoft slowly breaking the classic version of Outlook to drive user to the new, riddled-with-ads version of Outlook. Does anyone else have this problem?
