I mean, he was a carpenter, right? I am merely a mortal handyman tasked with replacing a rotted section of base board.

The 61” of missing wood that I just removed, to be exact. I’m not happy with those posts (or with the wood on concrete situation that is begging for more rot down the road) so I’d like to present the owner with some better options.

I can think of two alternative for the post situation:

  1. Brace the horizontal beam above with jacks, then cut the bottom 6” off of the posts and put some kind of footer under them.

  2. Brace the horizontal beam with jacks and replace the entire post(s) with the feet wrapped in a waterproof casing.

I think the base boards could just be raised an inch to keep them dry, but she might want some sort of waterproof dam to keep the porch dry.

So, what would y’all recommend? Either of those options viable? Or is there a better way?

The cheap option would be to just slather the rot in wood hardener and pack some bondo in it, but I don’t need Jesus to tell me that would be wrong.
