I wanted to learn more about different 1.16.1 boat clutch methods and came across this awesome comment by u/Daniel_H212. As far as I can tell, it was the best documentation of the differences between them. I wanted to figure out exactly which heights work for each method, so I made a map and tested it. For each block height, I tested the "Hold Click" method and the "Jump Click" method (3 and 4 in the original comment). Both methods were tested with walk-off and jump-off for a total of four methods per height. I did 50 attempts for each method at each block height or until I hit the clutch a few times to confirm it was possible at that height. While I'm fairly confident in the data, this was all hand-tested, so if anyone downloads the map and finds discrepancies, please let me know! Download: Boat Clutch Testing Map

Conclusions:

While the "Hold Click" and "Jump Click" methods do not work at every height, one of them is possible at each height tested. This means you can combine them to guarantee a clutch is possible, but you still need to nail the click timing. Hold Jump as you fall, time your boat place, and continue holding down M2 in case you were at a height that cannot "Jump Click."

Other Stuff:

  1. Drag-clicking is still better. I didn't include it on the chart, but it worked at every height in this test and you don't have to time it. It is still worth holding Jump when drag-clicking in case you miss the drag and you happen to be at a height where the "Jump Click" method works.
  2. For the "Jump Click" method, I saw no difference in consistency between tapping Jump and holding Jump. Switching between them also did not "unlock" more possible heights. I've seen some people claim that tapping was better, so I'd be curious to know how they tested this.
  3. Make sure to release your Jump key before exiting the boat to avoid desync.
  4. I tested a few half-slab, soul sand, and snow heights and they all had at least one of the two possible methods work. This doesn't mean it works at every height, but I think it's probably a good indication. If I get around to testing more partial-block heights, I'll update this post. Or if someone can test using math or something that'd be awesome too :)
