Opening Scene to Mystery GN: Looking for Feedback

Hi there,

I am a seasoned GN writer looking to start my illustration journey. I'm using an unpublished African mystery manuscript I wrote as a way to keep myself drawing and also get feedback from other illustrators.

Some questions to help guide feedback:

  1. Is it clear what is happening in terms of story?
  2. I know the drawing style is very rudimentary but do you still find it compelling?
  3. Would you read on? Why or why not?
  4. How (tf) do you illustrate a rainforest without drawing like a million leaves?

I'm want to learn how to illustrate by hand so going digital is a non-negotiable for me. Otherwise, I'm totally open to changing up the media. The story is pulpy and gritty so I figured I'd try my luck with black ink to give it some of that Maus/Whiteout/Sin City quality. Very hard to do shading I'm realizing...

Anyways, that's it! I'd love your thoughts and I'd be happy to reciprocate to folks who are looking for critique partners. Thanks!
