I Plagiarised, and getting kicked out of the Program
Folks, I have committed an academic crime.
So I had submitted a work last year to a conference, the appendix of which contained derivations which were plagiarized from some other paper — which I didn’t cite (with the hope that it would make my work look good).
Paper got accepted, but before even being online I withdrew the paper from Arxiv as well as conference, when my faculty notified me of the blatant similarities.
I am not defending myself, I have committed this act of academic crime. The code is mine and I have run experiments to prove that these are very well my experiments.
Hence, my faculty advisor is giving me a choice of withdrawing from PhD altogether, instead of being terminated by the institution. I don’t have an MS degree also, I joined direct PhD program after BTech.
Now I have other works which are worthy of writing an MS thesis and graduating with an MS, but my faculty advisor is not willing to let the matter go.
I truly understand the severity of the situation and repent every moment of it.
But is there any way I can appeal to my Doctoral Committee or Dean Academic Research or similar higher ups? HoD is not willing to take up the matter and pushing for immediate termination.
I am in one of the top IITs in India. And hence there is a matter of institute’s reputation also. The story behind why I did such an act hardly matters. I accept the fact that I have done this mistake. But please suggest whether there could be a way out.
My faculty advisor suggested I join other institutes for MS or PhD in the future but never to step foot in this institute ever again.
I’m extremely depressed, and kind of in need of help.
