Co-owning a (small) construction company?

For the past 25 years, I’ve made a living as a steadily advancing marketing executive. A few years back my wife and I began working with an architect and in the past eight months with a GC to build a custom home. As a strategic and creative marketing professional, I’ve found myself fascinated during each stage of the build process so far. And anticipating what’s next.

I’ve really connected with our builder. He and his crew are high quality. Precise and thorough. However the GC/business owner’s struggle to grow isn’t capabilities or capacity. It’s the challenges of business development, to,e management, site acquisition, client communications, and traditional back-office business management: spreadsheets, budgets, emails, timelines. Meanwhile these are all aspects of business where I thrive.

Here’s where I may be crazy.

I am consumed with the idea of entering into a new career and partnering with him. Him: Front of house builder foreman accountable for subcontractors / Me: back of house biz dev office manger sales and marketing. Am I crazy? (Incidentally, I suggested the idea to him and he said he’s thought the same thing a half dozen times but thought I’d never have any interest in changing my career.)

Tell me why I should think twice and then again a third time.
