Bought my first home but don't feel I fit the area. What would you do?
I'm looking for some advice from people who have been through something similar.
I'm a first-time buyer and bought my home in April 2025. Affordability was my main priority, and I was also conscious of the stamp duty changes, so I probably moved a bit quicker than I otherwise would have.
The house itself is fine, but I just don't feel like I fit into the area. It's not a bad area at all, and I can completely understand why people like living here, but it's very family-oriented and suburban. I grew up in Zones 1 and 2 in London and have spent most of my life in busier, more diverse areas. Moving to Zone 6 has been a much bigger adjustment than I expected.
I've now been here for over a year and, if anything, the feeling hasn't gone away. I think about it consistently and still don't feel settled or particularly happy in the area. It's less about the house and more about feeling disconnected from the lifestyle and environment around me.
My partner is happy here but is also open to moving if that's what we eventually decide. I don't regret buying, but I do wonder whether we chose the wrong location.
The financial side is what makes this difficult. I'm fully aware that moving again would cost a lot of money, and while I do have significant savings, I don't want to spend a huge amount of them correcting a decision if that's not the smartest thing to do.
What I'm struggling with is whether this is a valid reason to move, or whether I'd be making an emotional and expensive decision. Has anyone moved relatively soon after buying because they realised the area just wasn't right for them? How did you approach the financial side of it, and did you feel it was worth it in the end?
