I worked at a top 5 (in size) asset carrier with a large broker presence. I was doing 4-5 bids daily. I can’t imagine a single broker would be doing the same while managing freight, but was always curious how many bids you guys do

I recently left my company, top 5-10 freight carrier by size in the U.S., on good terms because I’ve been building some really cool logistics software. I went into the software industry, but also started my own business on the side.

I met with a former boss of mine yesterday and they are looking at bringing me on to replace their bid processing (takes customer bid info and puts in formulas etc and gets it into a version ready for upload into Salesforce). They’re looking down the road to even have me replace the Salesforce-Excel connection which would be a massive project.

For this first project, what should I charge? They’re also very interested in my software I’ve started building for my company as well, and getting my first consultancy or my first product buyer, with this large of a company, would be huge for my business.

I’m at a crossroads where I’ve built some really novel and cool tools, am very open to consulting, but haven’t tried selling anything yet. I need my first customer. Any thoughts or advice would be helpful!

We had to go through a dozen bids a week some bids with thousands of lanes when I worked in the brokerage division for a top 5 trucking company (in size).

Question I have: how large are lane data sets for brokers on the solo and small team end? Do you have your specific market and stick to that and are you doing RFPs?
