Missing Oil Drain Plug–Honda CPO Denial
To start, thanks to all you mechanics out there!! I appreciate you being willing to share your expert advice.
I was driving on the highway in my 2022 Honda HR-V Sport when I heard a pop noise. Suddenly there was a trail of white smoke behind me. I pulled over immediately and smelled rubber at first. When I got out of the car I could see oil pouring out from the front/middle of the car. I've only had the car for a year and it is CPO/still under warranty.
The details:
- Vehicle: 2022 Honda HR-V Sport (~30,000 miles)
- While driving on highway: sudden pop, then white smoke
- Pulled over immediately (under a minute or two); no warning lights or power loss beforehand
- I smelled rubber while I was still in the car
- After exiting the car, I observed significant oil leak from front-middle underside
- I shut off the vehicle and did not restart it
- Roadside assistance (Honda/AAA) took 4 hours; vehicle eventually towed to Honda dealer
- Dealer initial inspection: oil drain plug missing
- Dealer stated diagnostic needed ($199/hr) to determine full extent and cause
- Dealer noted issue is “generally not covered” at this preliminary stage and said it would be the responsibility of the last mechanic who did my oil change
- My last oil change was several months ago
My questions for this thread:
- What could have caused this issue?
- Is this common with Honda HRV Sport AWD from 2022
- Is the dealership service center making a fair assessment or do they not want to cover it under my warranty?
- If it is in fact the fault of the last oil change, what might be needed to get the prior mechanic to cover the issue? How likely is it I can get them to resolve this?
- Are there any important questions or considerations I may be missing?
Thanks again to the mechanics who can share there insights here!
