Hello everyone. Crossposted from r/hamstercare This post is going to be sad so content warning about hamster illness and death.
I work at a pet store and today I was told there was a sick hamster in the back room that would likely have to be put to rest. I went to check on him and the poor thing is laying motionless with his mouth wide open, breathing all ragged. His eye is bulging on one side and his rear end is soaked in urine. I’m almost certain he is suffering and will not make it through the night. We are understaffed today and can’t get ahold of our emergency vet over the phone as they haven’t been picking up. Theres nobody who can go and take him to the vet right now as we literally have 3 people running the store right now and can’t leave. The manager said he will take the hamster to the vet tomorrow because we will have more staff then, but I do not think he will survive. Any advice as to what to do? Or at least how to make him more comfortable as he passes? He was previously just laying in a bunch of bedding and the bedding was getting in his mouth and such so I grabbed a dog bandana from our grooming salon and putt it under him so he wouldn’t be choking on any bedding.
I’m really sad about this situation, so any help would be appreciated. I would take him after work myself but 1. Company policy forbids it (not that I care about that, but my manager would not let me walk out of the store with him) and 2. I don’t have a car so I’d have to take him on transit and 3. I don’t have any money to pay the vet out of pocket since the company wouldnt cover it if I did it against policy
