Should I Go to the UK for My Master’s Despite My Family’s Financial Situation?
Hi, I’m 23 (M) and I graduated in 2025. I’m planning to go to the UK for my master’s degree, but I’m feeling really confused about whether it’s the right decision.
Academically, I’m decent. Right now, I work in the IT sector in Nepal and earn around NPR 45,000 per month. The problem is that my family has a lot of debt—more than NPR 4 million (40+ lakhs). Because of that, I constantly feel pressured and don’t know what the right thing to do is.
With my current salary, almost half of it goes toward supporting my family and household expenses.
Today, I visited a consultancy, and they told me the total cost of studying in the UK would be around NPR 2.5 million (25 lakhs). When I discussed it with my dad, he said he would try to arrange the money, which would most likely mean taking another bank loan.
Thinking about that makes me feel like I shouldn’t go. But at the same time, I also feel that if I move abroad and manage to earn around NPR 100,000–200,000 per month, I could first repay my education loan and then gradually help clear my family’s debt.
I’m honestly very frustrated and mentally exhausted. I don’t know what the right decision is.
I’m the youngest in my family. I have three older brothers and one older sister. My brothers have been studying CA but haven’t qualified yet, so there’s not much financial support coming from them either.
From the outside, people assume we’re a big family with a good income, but the reality is very different. We don’t own a house or any land.
I’m not complaining, though. I actually feel privileged that I’ve been able to study this far and build a career. My biggest goal is to make sure these debts end with my generation so that the next generation of my family doesn’t have to carry this burden.
I’d genuinely appreciate honest advice from anyone who’s been in a similar situation or has experience with this. What do you think would be the better decision?
