25F | 3 years of unexplained eyelid swelling

I've been dealing with recurring eyelid swelling since I was 22 and I'm only now starting to piece together what's actually going on. I'm posting here because I feel like I've hit a wall with doctors and I'm wondering if anyone has a similar experience or any advice.

**My background:**

At 20 I had an upper endoscopy that showed mild chronic gastritis and reactive mucosal changes across the gastric antrum and body — negative for H. pylori. It was never treated or followed up. I also dealt with really bad hormonal acne around that time that was linked to gut health.

**What's been happening:**

Starting at 22 I began getting episodes of eyelid swelling — both lids, significant puffiness, itching, and small bumps. It comes and goes randomly and I couldn't figure out the pattern for a long time.

**What I've done so far:**

- Saw an allergist — told me it wasn't food related, no IgE allergies found

- Switched to Vanicream only, removed all skincare products

- Saw a GI doctor — dismissed histamine intolerance as "rare with not much fact behind it" and said food can't solely target the eyelids

- Just completed an 80 allergen patch test

**Patch test results — 4 positives:**

  1. Nickel sulfate

  2. Cobalt chloride

  3. Hydroperoxides of Linalool

  4. 2-n-Octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one

The dermatologist told me she doesn't think any of these are relevant to my eyelid symptoms. She referred me back to the allergist.

**What I've figured out on my own:**

I'm pretty convinced I have both contact allergy AND histamine intolerance happening simultaneously. My worst flares consistently follow high histamine foods — wine, aged cheese, artificial dyes, chocolate, processed foods. I had a severe reaction after a movie theater night where I ate parmesan truffle popcorn, sour patch kids, a soft pretzel and drank pinot grigio. Another bad flare after eating a banana nut muffin, gummy worms, and an eclair in the same day.

I also had laser tattoo removal recently and my eyelids flared after each session — which makes sense if histamine release from the laser was pushing me over my threshold.

I was completely symptom free for about 2 months (January-February) and I can't figure out what was different then.

**The connections I've made:**

- Chronic gastritis at 20 likely damaged my gut lining where DAO enzyme is produced

- Low DAO = can't break down histamine from food fast enough

- Nickel and cobalt allergy = metal eyelash curler I used daily pressing directly on my eyelids

- Hydroperoxides of linalool = in almost every scented hair product I was using including Enjoy shampoos

- Histamine and estrogen dysregulation = also had hormonal acne

**Current protocol:**

- Daily Allegra

- Pepcid 20mg at night

- DAO enzyme supplement before meals

**My questions for this community:**

  1. Has anyone else had eyelid angioedema specifically triggered by food?

  2. Has anyone been diagnosed with histamine intolerance after a history of chronic gastritis?

  3. Did anyone else test positive for nickel/cobalt and find their eyelid symptoms improved after eliminating metal tools and jewelry?

  4. Has anyone had success getting a DAO enzyme test ordered and if so which doctor ordered it?

I feel like I've connected all the dots myself and no doctor wants to engage with the full picture. Any advice on what kind of specialist actually takes histamine intolerance seriously or has dealt with something similar would be really appreciated.
