My pain points with AiPaper Mini

Yesterday I got the AIPaper Mini and honestly I'm a bit disappointed. Mostly with the software, as the device itself seems to be mostly okay.

  1. The thing that does not work the most is the conversion of text from handwritten to digital.
I will write something like "Does it work?" and the output is "D oes it work". With some extra space and without the question mark...
Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I have very special style of handwriting, but it is unusable in the current form. I had much more success using some random apps 10 years ago and they were much more accurate, and had gestures like adding spaces, removing text by scribbling over it etc. I don't see it in this device, which is honestly extremely weird as for the device advertised exactly for things like this.
Are there any options of fixing that? Maybe a better external application?

  2. Palm rejection seems to be struggling and I'm often clicking unwanted things by mistake.

  3. I don't get the point of calendar and possibility of drawing over it. For example I have May opened. And it shows some last days of April and first days of June as well. If I will draw something on top of June and then switch page to June - then this note goes away. I'm doing something that I'm not supposed to do? What is the point of showing days from other months and letting me draw over them, if the notes are not really linked with said month?

  4. It seems there is no way to customize the left sidebar. With all due respect - is the viwoods forum so important to put it there and have access to it from multiple places? And without a way to get rid of it? I can think of like 20 other things that could be there instead of the forum...

  5. There is no way to remap the "AI" button on the bottom right. I know this is "AI" tablet, but it would be nice to have a possibility to use it for something else.

  6. The application for drawing seems to be very limited. I don't see a way to draw ready made shapes for example.
There is no way to customize the toolbar.
There is no way to quickly copy color/shade from a different part of the image.
There is no way to fill a shape
The shapes enhancing is not very helpful. I will try to draw a rectangle, but instead of getting a rectangle I will get a crooked 4 sided shape. With straight lines, but it is not a rectangle. Circles are similar - they always become an ellipse. And the wait time for the enhancing to pick up is too long. I would like a way to customize this delay as well, or a toggle to always fix the shapes.

  7. Application for reading books does not have an option to switch the colors and have black background with white text.

  8. The on device user manual seems to be broken and does not allow to switch pages by swipes or taps. I need to open the scrollbar at the bottom of the screen and click the arrows there to change the page.

  9. It has Android security update from almost 4 years ago. For a device connected to the internet, this is quite a security risk.

And now onto the hardware:

  1. The backlight has unpleasant color. I assume that the backlight is mostly to be used in dark environments? Then why make it this very sharp blue tint that is not pleasant to look at. Especially at night in bed. It might make the white paper look really white (which is otherwise pretty greyish), but it does not serve the purpose of reading in poor lighting.

  2. The loop for storing the stylus is not detachable and there is no way to hide it. I saw that AiPaper has the notch to hide that loop in the case, but it looks like it is only in the big version, not the mini one. Magnets are pretty strong and that is a big plus, and I prefer to not use the loop and I would like to hide it.

So in summary this device is okay, not terrible, but it has still many small things that really annoy me. I was only one day and maybe I will get used to some of them, or maybe there are ways to go around them, but it is not what I expected from a device costing like 480$.

If you think I'm wrong, or I missed something please tell me.

Looking for my first e-reader

I've never had an e-reader, but I want to get more into reading. As for today I'm planning to read mostly PDFs, articles or websites. Since this is what I'm usually reading anyway. But maybe once I will have it I will start to read actual books as well. From time to time I might annotate something.

My ideal device would be "open". So one that does not require an account, and lets me do whatever I want with it. It should have a stylus and it should be passive (the EMR technology?). Something in the range of 7-10" should be fine. Physical buttons would be great. I'm not sure if I need the backlight, but maybe it would nice to have it. If it was waterproof it would be great.
I don't want color since it dulls the contrast. I probably don't really need the internet access as well since I could upload everything myself manually.

Initially I had my eyes on Boox Go 7 or 10. But I saw that they ditched the EMR stylus for an proprietary active technology and it kinda killed my interested in this device. Also looking at the fact that Google is locking down Android I'm not actually sure if this type of device is a right choice for me.

Is there a device that you could recommend in the price range of $200? At maximum I'm willing to spend is around $500.
