AI Paper vs Boox 10.3 Lumi

I need someone's help, who has used these two devices. I'm stuck between the viwood's and the boox. The boox had the front light but the viwood's has been really calling to me with it's beautiful 1300 display. It just doesn't have a front light and the software on the boox is more refined from what I can tell.

I've had boox devices before also, so I'm familiar with their ecosystem...

But I want someone's take who's had both of these devices. I need some insight. What feels better for writing/reading. I'd be doing a lot of both of those.

What does a blue light mean?

Just got off a flight and noticed this light is on all the time. I’ve seen it amber colored when charging I think, but what’s light blue? I couldn’t find my user manual to look it up and Google wasn’t helpful.

EDIT: It’s off the charger after charging to 100% and I turned it off and the blue light remains on.

Using Gemini 3 Pro on the Viwoods Reader with voice input is a game-changer

I don’t have a paid subscription for Gemini 3 Pro, but honestly, I think Gemini 3 Pro is the most useful AI right now. I find myself constantly pulling it up on my Viwoods Reader to ask questions. Typing on an e-ink screen is pretty slow, so voice input is definitely the way to go. You can either long-press the dedicated AI button on the Reader to trigger voice input, or just install Gboard and use that. Being able to tap into gemini 3 Pro on this device alone makes the Reader feel like it’s already paid for itself.

The 10.65-inch AiPaper is a bit too large for long time holding, so I mainly use it for handwriting and notes. When it comes to reading, I much prefer the Reader — I can easily hold it with one hand, and even after long reading sessions my neck and hand don’t get sore. If you’re considering both, I’d say: AiPaper for serious writing, Reader for everything else.

Survey website not working properly.

Dear u/viwoods team, I tried to help you with the survey, but cannot finish answering the questions. Q4 & Q5 are covered by a request to join the mailing list. I could not find a way to see those questions. :-)

Anyway I am working professional and would love to have templates for calendar and habit tracking.

I also would really like to see an update to your PDF and epub reading app to allow adding comments to the documents as a text snippets as well as to have other offline dictionaries.

Coming from Remarkable, what level of organization tools are there on the AIPaper Mini?

So I’m currently trialing a Remarkable Paper Pro Move and have an AIPaper Mini coming today. One of the things I’ve found it hard to find info on is what level of organization tools there are on the Mini. The Remarkable has the form factor I like, plus color, but the battery life and lack of basically any tools whatsoever (by design) has left me wanting more.

Ideally I’d get something at least halfway to the Supernote lineup, but not sure how close it gets.

Also - unrelated - does anyone have a recommended list of Play Store apps that work well with the Viwoods devices? Thanks!

Viwoods AI reader light question

So I finally got my AI reader and I did the setup and all is well.

I am reading with the light set to zero (completely off)

However there is an app (like kindle for Arabic books) that forces the light on once I open a book. It switches off again in the app menu or when I am browsing my list of books to read etc.

But as soon as I open a book it forces light on (and it remains off in settings bar)

Anyone faces a similar issue and have an advice?

I would like to control the light only from the Viwoods.

PS it was off in the apps book view till I tested dragging in the app's light on!

Why does an E Ink tablet cost $300-500 (₹25K-42K) when it probably shouldn't?

This is something I've been thinking about for a while and wanted to discuss here.

The common answer when you ask why E Ink tablets are expensive:

"Niche market. Innovation costs money. Premium product."

Partially true. But there's a bigger, less-discussed structural reason most people don't know about.

E Ink Holdings has a near-monopoly.

E Ink Holdings (a Taiwanese company) owns 2,000+ patents on electrophoretic display technology. Every manufacturer — Kindle, reMarkable, Kobo, Onyx Boox — pays royalties to E Ink on every device sold.

Those royalties significantly inflate the price you pay.

Here is the Rough breakdown (estimated):-

Current situation:-

· E Ink panel (with heavy royalties): ~$60-100 (₹5K-8K)

· Other hardware: ~$80-100 (₹6.5K-8K)

· Manufacturing: ~$20 (₹1.6K)

· Company margin: ~$40-60 (₹3K-5K)

· Final price: $300-500 (₹25K-42K)

If royalties dropped to standard industry rates (3-5%):-

· E Ink panel (reduced): ~$30-40 (₹2.5K-3.3K)

· Everything else: same

· Estimated final price: $150-200 (₹12K-16K)

That gap is paid by you, the consumer, every time.

Is there an alternative?

Yes — DES (Display Electronic Slurry), developed by Good Display (China). A fundamentally different e-paper approach that doesn't rely on E Ink's microcapsule method.

It could potentially challenge this monopoly. But it's been in development for 8+ years and still isn't mainstream — because navigating 2,000+ patents is slow, expensive, and legally risky even for well-funded companies.

What I'm not saying:-

· E Ink is doing anything illegal (they're not)

· Patents are inherently bad (they're not)

What I am saying:-

· A significant portion of what you pay goes to royalties, not hardware

· Limited competition = limited price pressure

· Most consumers don't know this structure exists

Questions for discussion:-

· Did you know about E Ink's patent situation before this?

· Would you buy an E Ink tablet at $150-200 (₹12K-16K)?

· Do you think DES will eventually challenge this?

Happy to discuss further.

Disappointing screen quality

I recently picked up the Viwoods AiPaper reader, but I have to admit I am struggling with the screen quality, especially when comparing it to my older Kobo Libra 2.

Even though the Libra 2 is a few years old now, the visual clarity feels significantly better. On the Kobo, the blacks are deep and the background is a crisp, clean white. In comparison, the Viwoods screen looks somewhat dull and greyish, as if there is a permanent layer of haze over the text.

The situation gets even worse when switching to dark mode. While the Kobo handles inverted colors beautifully with sharp white text on a solid black background, the Viwoods looks washed out. The "black" areas feel more like a dark charcoal, and the ghosting becomes much more prominent, making it almost unusable for night reading.

I understand that the Viwoods is a different beast, but I expected the reading experience to be at least on par with an older mid-range e-reader. The Carta 1200 tech on the Kobo still seems to hold the crown for pure legibility.

Has anyone else made a similar jump from a dedicated e-reader to the Viwoods? Did you manage to find any software or contrast settings that help bridge the gap, or is this just an inherent limitation of the hardware?

I really wanted to love this device for my workflow, but the step back in screen crispness is hard to ignore.

Edit : removed bad Info about the stylus, aipaper reader doesn't support it.

New AIPaper Mini and Sync between devices

All,
The AI Paper Mini seems to be getting a little long in the tooth. Any idea when a new version might be coming out?

Also, I thought they were soon going to release notes syncing between devices. I’m not sure I’ve seen that yet. I have the AI paper and I’m thinking about getting the mini, but don’t want to buy an old product and I want to make sure I can sync content between devices.

I was missing the notification drawer on my AiPaper, so...

Does anyone else find it frustrating that swiping down on the Viwoods AiPaper just refreshes the screen instead of showing notifications? I've been looking for a workaround for a while and I found a small overlay app that adds a notification panel.

Sharing it here in case it's useful to others: github.com/magcrider/inkBell

Has anyone found other ways to handle this? If anyone tests it, would love to know how it runs on different firmware versions.

To Do List

Is it possible to change the number of displayed items per page in the Daily ToDo List? It is so little practical to have only 6 items displayed in huge line spacings...

Finally: Remapping the AI button in 1.4.0!

Just got the notification to update to v1.4.0 today and immediately went to the settings to remap the AI button to something else. I had previously disabled, and tried to remap it using another app, but that was too many steps and details for me (I just wanted to remap one button). Thankfully, v1.4.0 now offers that option 😁

Adding a sim to ViWoods reader

I’m considering adding a SIM card to my ViWoods AiPaper reader. I don’t often need access away from my WiFi, but it would be nice to have it when I do need it. This would mainly be for downloading ebooks and occasionally audiobooks; don’t do email, Facebook, or consume news or videos on the device. It’s strictly a Reader. (Or Listener.) The audiobooks would probably gobble up usage, but I could probably budget that. I’m curious if anyone has experience using a low cost or pay-as-you-go data-only plan. I’m in the US which would obviously affect the answer.

Paper - Voice recording to Text

I attempted something new to me today.

I converted audio to text so that I could then copy and transfer that text to an email. That didn't work. The only thing I can do with the converted text is move it on the same page, or after some machinations I was able to copy and paste to another Paper.

Once we have copied that Text ..... we should be able to paste it anywhere.

Has anyone else tried this? Have I missed a step somewhere along the line?

Also, can somone explain to me what "Appropriate Post Flair" means?

Looking to switch from Palma 2 Pro to AI Reader C

I really like the palma 2 pro but the screen is just far too fragile to be an everyday carry around device. Anyone have experience with both? I’ve seen reviews that mention Kindle crashing a lot is that still an issue? Would mostly be using Kindle, Readwise Reader, and some news paper apps

Feature Request - Battery charge limiter for AiPaper Reader (C)

Not sure where I should best post a feature request. Maybe via the ViWoods Email as well?

I would very much like to see a hard battery charge limit to 80% or fully customizable.

Benefits: Preserves battery life in the long run and makes doing so easier as the user can keep the phone plugged in.

Take Samsungs charge limiter as an example. It will limit the charge to a user defined setting and will keep the battery at this level permanently while it is plugged in.
However, a simple 80% limit would already be enough for 99.99% of people.

AI Paper Mini Help

Morning Everyone

I have just started using the AI Paper Mini and when I go to use the handwriting to text features it just seems to not read my handwriting.

If I put it through the Chat GPT integration it’s fine but when it’s just the standard text entry box and I’m writing on the screen it’s really bad, am I doing it wrong or is there something I need to change in the settings?
