AIW for returning the $1200 grill my FIL gifted me after he tried to turn me into his personal weekend servant
So my father in law shows up two months ago with this massive pellet grill in his truck. It is one of those high end setups that costs more than my first car and he tells me it is a late housewarming gift. I thought he was finally being a decent guy for once so I thanked him and spent the whole evening setting it up and seasoning it. I realy should have known there was a catch because nothing this man does is ever just a nice gesture without some strings attached.
The first Saturday after I got it he shows up at noon with his brother and like six other people I barely know. He did not even call he just walked into my backyard and told me to get the grill started because they brought some ribs. I figured whatever it is a one time thing so I spent eight hours managing the temp and serving them while they sat on my patio and drank my beer. Then it happend again the next weekend and the one after that. It turned into this unspoken rule where my backyard was now the designated family canteen and I was the unpaid pitmaster who also provided the drinks.
When I told him last Friday that I had other plans and was not going to be cooking for twenty people he absolutely lost his mind. He started shouting that he bought me that grill specifically so I could take care of the family and that I was being an ungrateful prick. He actually said that since I have the grill now it is my responsibility to host. The level of entitlement is just insane to me. He acted like he bought a servant for twelve hundred bucks instead of giving a gift to his son in law. We got into a massive shouting match where he told me I was ruining the family dynamic just because I didnt want to stand over a fire for ten hours every weekend.
I got so sick of the drama that I loaded the damn thing back into my truck and dropped it off in his driveway that same night. I told him he can cook his own ribs if he misses the grill so much. Now my wife is getting heat from her mother and everyone is acting like I am the villain for returning a gift. I dont care how much it cost if a gift comes with a lifetime contract of manual labor then it is not a gift it is a job. I am just done with this bullshit and his weird power trips over a piece of metal .
