A Lantern Riddle is the second Cantonese play written by poet Clara Hsu. It is performed by members of the San Francisco Cantonese-speaking community. English subtitles is provided so that more people may enjoy the richness and complexity of the Cantonese culture.
In 2024, Clara Hsu produced DragonBeard, her first Cantonese play. Following the enthusiastic response from the community, Clara produced Canto Pride in 2025, a theatrical variety show that included short skits, classical poetry, contemporary rap and tongue twisters.
Lantern riddle is a word game popular in ancient China, especially on the 15th of the first lunar month. Topics go from a character to political satire. A lot of poetry was used in the lantern riddles. Our story begins at the San Francisco Chinatown’s Night Market. During the same night, three Chinese ancient poets are called to be reborn. They waited for the signal, which is hidden in a lantern riddle.
A Lantern Riddle is directed by Clara Hsu and Cruz Chan. The play is financially supported by an artist grant from San Francisco Arts Commission.
