Askare + Packing straps

Really enjoying the Askare and the Packing straps makes it even more versatile when you want to carry or store something like a jacket or picnic blanket.

I also threaded a piece of 550 through the grommet on the bottom so I can secure a knife sheath inside to draw the knife one handed.

I remember being surprised that the Askare doesn't have a large flat pocket on the backface but after giving it some thought, it makes perfect sense now. If you were to put something large and square in a pocket like that it would be simply uncomfortable to carry. Putting items in the elastic bands will not hinder your comfort since the bag can still bend around the waist. I honestly think Savotta tried the flat back pocket at first and realized it's not practical and decided to remove it. Love it!

Great Rintamus add-ons from Baribal poland

Got the Fronter pouch but in custom length for my phone. Fits pretty great but the standard 16 cm size probably fits better on the outer loop patch. It has plastic clips to properly secure it to the PALS webbing. The small pockets are great for random stuff but I specifically bought it so it snugs my InReach mini 2. That way I can take it out and tuck it away easily. Don't like it when things dangle too much. When I'm not on the trail I'm running the phone pouch. Definitely realized how handy chest packs are for travelling by train/car and the easy access in general when hiking or setting up camp.

Making my own T-deck case from scraps

Seeing how pretty much all companies make abs or 3d printed cases which mostly aren't water resistant and that durable, I decided to use these casted aluminium scraps instead. I actually have to order the t-deck stuff but I should be able to make it work. I kinda like this crude metal applied to electronics. You always see the neat and sleek designs so it's fun to see the opposite. Still very light as well. I'm gonna try to make it as water resistant as possible and perhaps add EMC shielding as well.

Help me pick

So the last four weeks I've been interested in mesh networks and off grid communication and gps maps. From what I have gathered, Meshtastic seems like a better choice for hiking off grid whereas "others" seems more orientated around more solid infrastructure of nodes like towns and cities. Currently I am looking at these three devices as an off grid companion and possibly a gps map tile visual. Which one would you guys recommend? Also I wanted to know if the Wismesh pocket V2 has free text on it. I ruled out the wio tracker l1 pro since the battery life is so short. The buttons also seem sensitive for misfires. So far I only know the pocket V2 to have some IP rating so I guess the other options don't? Any help is appreciated.

My latest abomination

I have always had this obsession of fully decking out smaller utilities to squeeze as much out of them as possible. I always loved the TT mkII (9l) for everyday use. I put a Baribal pouch on it that I originally bought for the Jaakari to get some more space for EDC. Only recently did I get the idea to create a compact camping setup from it. Being more focused on tarp camping, I saw the opportunity to create a compact camping setup. Looking for a compact sleeping bag I picked up one from Naturehike. I designed a special pouch around it mainly just for the sleeping bag and some cord. That's the biggest pouch that I attached. On the back side there is a flat pocket in which I want to put a cutting board of sorts. I can also put a hatchet between the MOLLE behind the pouch. The pouch next to it contains water, food and tools. The side pouch next to it contains my cooking kit. A small pot with a Trangia inside. The other side pouch contains electrical utensils and binoculars. It has a camelback opening on the back where I can directly access the powerbank ports and run cables out of the pouch without it being open. The backpack itself hosts my DD tarp and clothes/food and such. I am thinking of buying a Savotta Rintamus chest rig where I can keep my tools and EDC stuff in so I can just leave the backpack at camp and go crafting with the chest rig. Should also give some counter balance to everything. The fdf sleeping pad is now simply attached with a shock cord which isn't super secure but it does allow the pad to pivot and move a bit which feels nicer. Can't wait to try it out! I can't commend Baribal Poland enough. You can customize almost everything and it will be made in no time. Next to that they put out great quality and what I like most is that I can choose Pencott Greenzone as a fabric. Which for doing totally legal wild camping, is quite important.

Funny lunchbox sling bag

I found out that in my Tasmanian tiger mkII m, there was a rotting putrid banana and it's mushy wetness was asking to be washed away. So I tried washing the bag with water. On that bag I have this custom pouch I got from Baribal. Apparently my lunchbox fits perfectly in this pouch. Since I had to take it off to wash the Tasmanian banana rat I realized I could make a sling bag from it since all I really need is my lunchbox. And voila, I found my keikka harness strap and used the pals mount of the pouch and looped them through the harness rings. Looks pretty cool!
