Personal loan was charged off 3 years ago and wondering if I need to get anything special in writing to protect us both

I am the main borrower but wondering if I need to communicate that the settlement needs to release both of us

Wondering if there will be a difference if I settle for less and save capital or pay in full to maybe “look better” for lending later this year.

I had a collection that sold the debt to collections, but recently I reached out just to see - and they were willing to have a conversation with me about the debt. My question is does it make sense to work with them or the collection agency?

The collection agency isn’t on my credit report and the original reported balance is $0
