The 3rd Company has some heavy support! My first Imperial Fists Redemptor Dreadnought

Brothers of Dorn! ✊

Finally finished my first Redemptor Dreadnought, ready to join my growing Imperial Fists 3rd Company!

Got back into the hobby this summer after nearly 20 years away, and after finishing my first 10 Intercessors, I wanted to tackle something a bit bigger.

Had a lot of fun with this one, particularly the sarcophagus interior, transfers and experimenting with battle damage and sponge weathering for the first time.

Still plenty to improve on, especially my edge highlighting, but I'm really pleased with how he's turned out alongside the rest of the company.

3rd Company squad is slowly coming together. For Dorn!

Little update on my first Imperial Fists squad.

Got the first couple finished and I'm working on the Sergeant now.

Sarting to get into a rhythm with the yellow and I'm absolutely loving seeing the squad slowly come together.

Also, my first time EVER using transfers and I'm obsessed lol.

Still got a long way to go, but considering yellow was kicking my arse a couple of weeks ago, I'm pretty fucking happy with where they're heading.

3rd Company, 2nd Squad

UPDATE: First two 3rd Company Imperial Fists finished. For Dorn!

Finally finished my first two Primaris Imperial Fists and I'm absolutely over the moon with them.

I've been getting back into painting after a long break and yellow absolutely kicked my arse at first, but after a lot of trial and error I feel like I've finally found a process that works for me. 💞

Went with 3rd Company because I absolutely love the red trim against the yellow, and I've started them as 2nd Squad with the Battleline markings.

Also did transfers for the first time ever today and I can't believe how much they change the whole model. The chapter badges, squad markings and little extra details suddenly made them feel like proper Imperial Fists.

Still plenty to improve, but seeing these two together has made me ridiculously excited to get the rest of the squad done.

UPDATE: Took everyone's advice and finished my first two Imperial Fists!

A little update from my last post where I was really struggling to get the yellow right.

I took loads of the advice you guys gave me, changed up my process, practised thinning my paints properly and just kept going. These are now my first two finished Primaris Imperial Fists and I'm honestly so fucking happy with them. 😬

They're obviously not perfect and I've still got loads to learn, but compared to where I started I genuinely can't believe the difference. I finally feel like things are starting to click and I've found a yellow process that I actually understand and can repeat.

I also did transfers for the first time ever today, which I was absolutely terrified of fucking up. I did actually destroy one on my first attempt, but once I figured it out they were way easier than I expected. I'm ridiculously happy with how much they've brought the models together.

Just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone who commented on my original post and gave me advice. I took a lot of it on board and it genuinely helped.

C&C definitely welcome. I'm especially keen to keep improving the yellow, highlights and overall finish as I work through the rest of the squad.

Now I've just got another 8 yellow bastards to paint lol.

First attempt at a 3rd Company Imperial Fist Intercessor

First attempt at painting an Imperial Fist Intercessor and I'm really happy with how he turned out.

My previous attempts at painting Space Marines were pretty rough, but I feel like something finally clicked with this one. I'm getting much better control of my wet palette and starting to understand thinning paints properly.

Still need to finish the base and add the transfers, and there's definitely loads I want to improve, but this feels like a massive step forward.

Went for 3rd Company with the red trim. I'm still torn between 3rd and 5th Company for the rest of my army, but I absolutely love how the red looks against the yellow.

Any tips from fellow sons of Dorn are very welcome.

First proper attempt at Imperial Fists before I start my Intercessors. Looking for some beginner advice

I've recently got back into Warhammer after around 20 years away and I've only been painting again for about a week or two.

I'm planning an Imperial Fists 3rd Company army and I've deliberately been practicing on some old Marines from around 2007 before I touch my new Primaris Intercessors.

These two are my latest attempts. This time I followed a Tabletop Ready Imperial Fists tutorial pretty closely instead of improvising.

My basic yellow process was:

Wraithbone spray
Two thin coats of Wraithbone
Imperial Fist Contrast
Then the rest of the colours, shading and highlights from the tutorial

I can definitely see improvement compared with my first attempts, but I'm still struggling quite a lot and I'm starting to get a bit demotivated by it.

I've spent a lot of time watching painting tutorials and trying to understand thinning, Contrast paints, wet palettes, edge highlighting etc, but I still feel like I can't consistently reproduce what I'm seeing in the videos.

The biggest thing confusing me right now is my Nicpro wet palette.

If anyone owns this exact palette, could you please explain how you actually set it up?

How wet should the grey sponge be?

Do you soak the paper separately?

Should there be any loose water left in the tray?

Once Citadel paint is on the palette, do you normally add extra water?

Mine often seems to become extremely watery very quickly. I think I may have been making things worse by adding more water after the palette has already hydrated the paint.

I'd also really appreciate advice on the painting itself.

In particular:

How can I get Imperial Fist Contrast smoother and less patchy?

Am I applying too little or too much Contrast?

Would you recommend a larger brush for the yellow armour?

How can I make my edge highlights thinner and cleaner?

Is there anything obvious in these photos that I should concentrate on improving before starting the Intercessors?

I'm not expecting these to be amazing this early, but I've been getting a bit stressed because I've spent weeks reading and watching tutorials and still feel like I'm fighting the paint rather than controlling it.

These models are also around 20 years old, so I know some of the surface texture is probably coming from the sculpts themselves rather than just the paint job. I've been told that the newer models (Intercessors) are BEAUTIFUL to paint and feel amazing, so maybe it'll be different but, honestly, I'm scared to actually open the box and build them cos I don't wanna ruin them with a terrible paint job.

I've genuinely tried to follow the process as carefully as I can, so I'm a bit disappointed with how rough they still look in places. I'm mainly trying to work out what I should practise next rather than jumping between another ten different painting methods.

Any constructive criticism is genuinely appreciated.

Returning to the hobby after 18 years and struggling with Imperial Fists yellow. Could really use some advice

Hi everyone. First time posting here and I'm hoping I can get some advice from people who actually paint Imperial Fists regularly.

I've recently got back into Warhammer after a very long break. The last time I was properly building and painting miniatures was around 2007/2008, so I'm basically relearning everything from scratch.

I've been easing myself back into it using some old miniatures before I touch anything new. I've painted a few old Space Marines and then recently painted a couple of Stormcast Vindictors. Through those I've done my first ever proper edge highlights, learned how to use a wet palette, started thinning my paints properly and today attempted drybrushing/overbrushing properly for the first time.

So I'm definitely improving, but yellow has humbled me a bit.

I've bought a box of new Primaris Intercessors, Imperial Fists upgrades and transfers, but I haven't built them yet because I wanted to work out a yellow recipe on some old Marines first rather than learn on the new models.

The five Marines in the photos are all old models from around 20 years ago that I stripped and reused as test models, so I'm aware that the surface of the plastic probably isn't perfect anymore either.

My original method was:

  1. Vallejo White Surface Primer brushed on

  2. Two thin coats of Screamer Pink

  3. Bold Titanium White drybrushed/overbrushed over the pink

Imperial Fist Contrast over the armour

  1. Dorn Yellow lightly drybrushed afterwards as a highlight

The idea was that the pink would remain in the shadows and the white would create the bright yellow areas once the Contrast went over it.

On my first couple of attempts I definitely didn't put enough white back over the Screamer Pink. The yellow became very brown/orange and dirty.

Models 3 and 4 were my attempt at correcting that. I went much heavier with the white so that the models were probably around 80% white with Screamer Pink mainly left in the deeper recesses. Those came out considerably better.

Model 4 is probably my favourite result so far. I actually really like the variation in the yellow and the darker shadows.

I also experimented with putting Dorn Yellow over the finished yellow with a very light drybrush. That brought some of the brighter areas back and I quite like the slightly worn/battle-worn appearance it created.

My biggest problem now is texture/chalkiness.

Some of the armour is looking quite dusty or grainy rather than smooth.

I'm trying to work out whether that's coming from:

- the brush-on primer,

- these being old stripped miniatures,

- the white drybrushing,

- the Dorn Yellow drybrush,

- or just a combination of all of them.

I currently live in a flat, which is why I've avoided spray primer. I have Vallejo white/grey/black Surface Primer, which I understand is primarily designed for an airbrush but can also be brushed on. I've also used Army Painter brush-on primer.

Coincidentally, I've just found out that one of my neighbours also paints Warhammer and sprays his models on the balcony without any problems, so buying a white spray primer is also an option for me now.

I'm therefore wondering what experienced Imperial Fists painters would recommend before I touch the new Intercessors.

Would you:

use white spray primer and put Imperial Fist Contrast directly over it?

keep the Screamer Pink shadow method but use much more white over the top?

use pink only in selected shadow areas rather than coating the entire model pink first?

avoid drybrushing the final Dorn Yellow and just edge highlight instead?

or use a completely different recipe?

I'm not trying to get competition-level results. I just want a nice bright Imperial Fists yellow with some depth, while keeping the armour reasonably smooth.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated. I'm enjoying learning everything again but there's an absurd amount of painting knowledge to catch up on after nearly two decades away!
