Sapa vs Bagui0 - Sapa is oversold huhu
Hi! Solo female traveler here (late 20s). Background lang what im like. I usually travel alone with just my backpack both domestic and international. Minsan hostels (pag maganda reviews lol), minsan upscale hotels. Twice pa lang ako nakasama sa friends mag-travel. I don’t like tourist traps and I also avoid unethical tourism like Oslob whale sharks, elephant rides, etc.
Kagagaling ko lang Vietnam solo trip. First stop ko Sapa. I did my research and asked friends who’ve been there. Sabi nila 2 full days is enough, and a content creator I follow Drew Espenocilla said set expectations kasi weather-dependent talaga ang activities. So i was ready. I booked a 3D2N stay with a train view. I skipped Cat Cat Village kasi based on my research its too touristy and not really authentic. I also skipped Glass Bridge and Moana stuff kasi feel ko masyadong gimmicky.
Instead, I did a 1 day village trek with a local guide this I actually enjoyed a lot. Rice fields and more grounded interaction with locals. I met a Japanese solo traveler which was nice. I also went up Fansipan mainly for my inner child healing moment lol and I actually enjoyed that part.
Pero overall… bakit parang nafeel ko na Sapa is oversold?
For me, it felt more like a tourist attraction kaysa cultural immersion. The trek saved the experience, but outside of that, parang wala na. After one day, nagsawa na ako sa train view. Sapa town proper didn’t feel local at all. Night market was okay but even riding around on Grab bike didn’t change the vibe.
Also, traumatic lang for me seeing very young kids loke babies performing/dancing for money. I know it’s complex and economic reality siya, but it affected my experience.
Mas nafeel ko pa actually yung “culture” sa Baguio maybe because mixed yung locals + tourists but still you can feel na lived-in place siya. Talo lang talaga sa amusement parks, accessibility for tourist like pag galing ka NAIA ang layo pa and sympre support fro PH Gov. So aminado naman ako na Sapa pa rin overall.
Sapa felt more like a tourism machine but for Baguio hindi nawawala yung spirit na taga Baguio sila. Na-over sell ba sya ng mga Pinoy dahil ang daming Pinoy and luxury satin ang cold weather HAHAHAHA.
Bihira lang din nakakita ng western foreigners na may backpacker vibe, but nakakita ako dun sa Trek Village. So nafeel ko dapat pala doon ako nagfocus kasi may tour na 2 days trek, like aakayatin talaga Fansipan via trek.
Ako lang ba naka-feel nito? Or maybe I am a complex person hehe im aware naman.
I loved Hanoi. Super chaotic in a good way. The scooter culture is mental but fun. I also liked the student free tours for English practice those were unexpectedly wholesome.
Skipped Ninh Binh and Halong Bay kasi I felt they were too tourist-heavy and I’ve been to Palawan both El Nido & Coron already. I liked Palawan but it’s not really my vibe I prefer Siquijor, Moalboal type destinations more.
So yeh… Sapa for me is oversold, but I’m not sure if it’s just my itinerary or expectations. Would love to hear honest takes from others who’ve been.
