Does hiking count for Z2 time?

I run about 3 times a week and do a Norwegian 4x4, tempo, and long run (but not Z2 pace). I hike 2 - 3 times a week and typically stay in Z1 and 2.

It seems to me that the time I spend in Z1 & 2 hiking is plenty - but some people have said to me that if it isn't while running it's not to the same benefit. That doesn't quite ring true for me, but wondered your experiences.
