THEORY: Echo will hatch from an egg
tl;dr Echo will vore Aurora
I have a theory that Echo will play a much larger role in the story's future, and it all has to do with eggs.
For the past month or so I've stumbled down a rabbit hole of Overwatch lore and even ancient mythology to find the connections that point to Echo becoming the next major catalyst in omnic history. At the center of this theory I've theorized that Echo will eat (yes, EAT) Aurora and inherit the essence of her sapience (not gain sapience, that's important) allowing her to reawaken millions of omnics, and potentially even the dead ones.
Let's learn a little bit more about Echo first:
Her Echo
Echo was created by Dr. Mina Liao, a founding member of Overwatch and the roboticist behind Aurora. Due to a quantum, likely cosmic level event, Aurora somehow gained sapience. After Anubis, the God AI behind the Omnic Crisis, took control over every compatible omnic, Aurora countered him by granting those some exact omnics sapience. This is known as the Awakening.
Dr. Liao was hailed as a hero afterwards. She was contracted by Overwatch to work on Athena, the game's announcer, and was eventually granted permission to work on her passion project: Project Echo.
Echo was then created as the next step artificial life with an adaptive mind capable of learning, evolving, and empathizing with humanity. She even broke down when she accidentally "killed" a civilian practice target. But before Liao could finish her work, she was murdered in an attack on her lab, leading Overwatch to seal Echo away out of fear of what she might become without guidance.
Eventually recovered by Cole Cassidy during the events of the Reunion cinematic, Echo is still in a very strange place on the Overwatch roster. Nobody looks like her at all, she's the odd one out
Let's talk about eggs
Eggs
Many ancient cultures believed reality emerged from a Cosmic Egg, but the ancient religion I think that's most closely tied to Overwatch's roster is Orphism. In Orphic mythology, the Egg is created by Chronos (Time) and shaped by Ananke (Fate), eventually giving birth to Phanes, a god whose cosmic melody creates life itself. I've come to the conclusion that Chronos is the Omnica Corporation, Ananke is Dr. Mina Liao, and Phanes is Aurora, whose Awakening gave consciousness to omnics much like how Phanes created the gods.
But the most interesting part about Phanes is that his power is passed down through a chain of succession until it eventually lands in the hands of Zeus. However, Zeus does something very interesting to Phanes
He eats him
I believe Zeus = Echo. Echo will consume Aurora in the same way Zeus consumes Phanes, possibly through the Iris. In Overwatch: Declassified, Echo is noted as actually being the fifth attempt at advancing artificial life, matching up with that Orphic chain of succession a little too well.
We also have the Route: 66 payload.
In Reunion, Echo "hatches" from it when Cole rescues her from the Deadlock Gang. What's very interesting about this payload though is that early concept art for it shows that it was initially just a box. But in The Art of Overwatch: Volume 2, the payload is specifically referred to as an egg. Meaning somewhere down the line, the decision was made to change it from a box to an egg, and for Echo to emerge from it.
The Second Awakening
Early reveals for Overwatch 2 hinted at a brand new announcer: Mondatta. This shows that the devs were planning for him to return somehow. There's even graffiti on New Queen Street that still reads “Mondatta Lives.”
Newer lore also suggests omnics can exist beyond their physical bodies, especially through Ramattra’s belief that the omnics he's placed neural suppressors on are being preserved rather than outright dead.
Building on that idea, my theory suggests that Echo will evolve into a God AI, similar to Anubis, capable of restoring omnic consciousness on a massive scale. Echo wouldn't be granting sapience herself, merely redistributing it. This would make Echo the bridge between humanity and omnics that Dr. Mina Liao always envisioned.
Echo is also the only hero who constantly brings up the Awakening through her interactions with other heroes, strongly hinting that she may already know of her purpose
If you want to see a much fuller breakdown of this theory, I've made a video essay going deeper with even more clues and evidence to back it up:
