Sample of Nahuatl Tengwar

This is a sample of a Tengwar orthography for Nahuatl that I have been working on.

UDHR Article 1 in Nahuatl Tengwar

Phoneme-letter correspondences

Transcription:

(Nahuatlahtolli) - modern Nahuatl

The choice of the letters is roughly based on the classical mode. The thinnas diacritic marks long vowels when preceded by a consonant. If the vowel is not preceded by a consonant, it is put on the letter ára. The letters with the sarince used for tz and ch are considered separate letters. There are separate letters for sounds common in Spanish loanwords.

Possible gismu forms of digits

These are hypothetical gismu forms of digits created to fit with the affixes for numbers and to avoid having to add -mei to number words when used as verbs. Some sounds in the words were also taken from the source languages.

Number PA word Affix Possible gismu
0 no -non- nocno
1 pa -pav- pavdi
2 re -rel- reldo
3 ci -cib- tcibe
4 vo -von- vorna
5 mu -mum- mumsa
6 xa -xav- xlavu
7 ze -zel- zesla
8 bi -biv- bivba
9 so -soz- snoza
A, 10 dau -duv-dek-^(1) dekto^(1)
B, 11 fei -fel- felci
C, 12 gai -gam- garmi
D, 13 jau -juz- juzre
E, 14 rei, xei^(2) -xem-^(2) xremi^(2)
F, 15 vai -vav- vravi

^(1)The digit A (10) is the only one of these that already has a gismu so its affix is shown alongside dau.

^(2)Both rei and xei exist for E (14), but only xei has a proposed affix. The r in xremi was added to be inclusive to rei.

This makes it easier to express values which do not already have digits and are not round multiples of ten as verbs. For example, being a set of 108, instead of being expressed as panobimei or pavnonbivmei, can be expressed as ctobivba "hundred-eight."

Place value expression is also allowed with this system, so instead of expressing 123 450 006 as parecivomunoki’oxa "one-two-three-four-five-zero-thousands-six," it can be expressed as ctoreldekcibymegykemvonctomumdekyki’okepkemxlavu "(hundred-two-ten-three-million)-(four-hundred-five-ten-thousand)-six." (This is obviously longer but at least it is clearer which digits are the thousands, millions, etc. and this can be useful to break down larger numbers beyond using just ki’o.) Since Lojban only has roots for powers of ten, it would only work for base ten numbers, but it would make it clearer that these are base ten, so you would not get the same kind of variability you get with panono (which depending on the base will not always correspond to xecto).

^(1)The brodV series have been in the official standard, but recently all except broda got moved to experimental (does anybody know why?)

^(2)This could take the rafsi -pov- but one lujvo has it as an experimental rafsi for po’o.

I would really want to see some of these have new rafsi but I am not asking that all of these get one. Because several of these words are just not going to be used in compounds.
