2015 Expedition 3.5L EcoBoost (120k miles) - Normal Injector Tick or Phaser Rattle?
I’m looking for some experienced ears to confirm if this engine noise is the normal high-pressure fuel injector sound or the beginning of a cam phaser issue.
The vehicle is a 2015 Ford Expedition Platinum with the 3.5L EcoBoost, currently sitting right around 120,000 miles. The engine in this video was completely warmed up, as the truck had been driven a couple of hours before I recorded this.
I haven't experienced any noticeable loss of power or check engine lights. The only drivability quirk is a very slight vibration when coming to a stop or creeping forward off the brake. I recently had the transmission fluid changed, which helped the vibration slightly but didn't eliminate it completely.
I am leaning toward this being the standard, rapid tick of direct injection, but given the mileage and the reputation of these engines, I want to ensure I am not overlooking a heavier mechanical clatter that points to timing components.
