Added sugars during hospital stay
I was hospitalized at the VA for a few days. I do my best to eat healthy and take care of my gut since it tends to go south easy. My gut was is also why I got hospitalized. For them to bring me over 100 grams of sugar a day for my meals is insane, and to ask me why I wasn't eating those parts of my meals. Seeing 34 grams of added sugar on a tiny Nestlé drink that was maybe 3 gulps of liquid 3x a day, not to mention all of the sugar packets, dole fruit cups, cheesecakes, juices that claim 0 sugar but are full of artificial sweeteners.
Can we feed hospitalized vets real food please? Especially the ones that have gastrointestinal issues as the cause for their hospital stay and not primarily sugar. Even the main entrees were covered in sugary sauces with the exception of the breakfast meal. Granted it came with a ton of syrup, but at least that was on the side and avoidable.
I know there's bigger issues, but nutrition is a huge influence on quality of life. The goal should be a healthy meal. That much sugar is criminal.
