Basic vs iPhone 14 PM quick comparo

I’ve been reading much lately on my Basic (also have a current PW) and appreciating its small size and weight. I still use my iPhone 14 Pro Max when out and about, but I didn’t realize the difference in size until I put them next to each other.

Another big consideration is the weight. The iPhone is 233 grams (8.22 ounces) and the Basic 158 grams (5.56 ounces). You can definitely feel the difference.

(I turned up the light on the Basic in the photograph and the Kindle app on my iPhone is set on my usual Bookerly on beige. Strangely, I don’t miss the warm front light on my Basic, and I don’t use it at all on my PW.)

Basic/PaperWhite brief comparo

So I couldn't resist getting a Kindle Basic on Prime Days to compare to my Paperwhite (current 12th gen).

First, the clarity/quality on both are really excellent. Photo shows with no frontlight and ambient roomlight. Basic on left is Bookerly 6, with the smallest margins. On right is the Paperwhite with Bookerly 5 (but the same actual size as Bookerly 6 on the Basic), one space between paragraphs. No frontlights on both with the PPW a shade warmer.

The Basic is surprisingly light and I can see where that may make a difference for some. I have the frontlights off on both although I usually have them on during my night reading. I can take some comparison photos if you want. I thought I would be using the warm light on the PPW, but I have it set on max cold and that isn't quite as cold as the Basic, but it's not a problem for me.

A couple of differences:

I find that for my reading style (if there is such a thing) is that the PPW gives me the most comfortable "glob" of text while the Basic is slightly too little. Not really a dealbreaker, just a little thing to note. The thing that I actually do miss on the Basic is the lack of page turn animation. I use that when I accidentally turn the page. The animation lets me know which way to go.

I also highlight much and the bigger PPW screen lets me highlight with greater speed and precision. And with my margins set to the smallest, hitting the top of page and bottom of page controls are easier on the PPW. In the photo, you will note a small screen stylus which solves the prob while at my desk.

The PPW is supposed to have much longer battery life but so far, battery life hasn't been a consideration at all. I don't travel with my Kindles and they both recharge quickly and battery life has never seemed like a problem. I usually read in bed with the Brightness at 9 or 10, and I leave the wireless connection on so everything will sync up automatically. (I use the iPhone app when waiting for public transit or doc's appt.)

Now that I have two Kindles (I actually have another Kindle, a 2015 gen7 PPW), I keep different stuff on each and grab the one I want depending on my mood.

Reactions to new “Recap” feature?

Just noticed this new function on my app and believe it is being rolled out on the devices also. Reactions?
