Possibly hot take: the Brown Line train car interior seat layout is infinitely better than the Red Line layout

I ride the Red Line daily for work and general life, but take all the lines regularly. Tonight, I’m riding Red > Brown > Pink. I just completed my transfer at Belmont from Red to Brown, and the difference between the interior layout of the Red and Brown is so noticeable.

To me, the Brown feels so much more comfortable (the wood paneling helps) and the seats seem so much more commute-friendly in their layout, with several individual seats and most of the seats facing windows at 90°, rather than each other. I like looking out the windows, but it’s difficult when you’re face-to-face with other passengers on the Red Line, where seats are parallel to the windows.

I also find myself squeezed between two broad-shouldered people seemingly daily - while the Brown Line’s emphasis on paired seats (like the priority seats in a Red - my favorite when the train is empty) and prevents that.

I also notice that the Brown Line is consistently colder than the Red, which I appreciate. I acknowledge the Red Line’s layout is more efficient from a technical, data-driven perspective. But that approach to the layout manifests as a bit sterile and unfriendly from my perspective as an individual commuter.

Ultimately, the Red Line is still my #1 because it’s 24/7 and much faster (and much closer to home), but I’ve always found the Brown Line to be more comfortable.

Anyone who agrees or disagrees, feel free to share.

Thoughts on At-Home Retainer Kits?

I have been out of braces for about 10 years, but still wear my overnight retainers regularly. I am on my second set. Unfortunately, the bottom tray broke a few days ago and I am going to replace the full set.

What are your thoughts on at-home retainer kits? Are they half the price of an in-office set for a reason? Should I stay away from them and just do a real orthodontic impression? I am very meticulous and feel I would be able to capture a quality impression, but that’s an assumption…

Any thoughts or personal experiences appreciated. Thank you.

iPhone Push Notification Only Showing Most Recent Email in Thread

Is this normal function, and has anybody else noticed/been frustrated by this?

I have push notifications on for all my GMail accounts on my iPhone. My phone recently updated to the new iOS, and now, the email preview notification will be replaced by a newer email if someone replies in the same thread.

I just received two emails back-to-back within the same thread, and the first email notification has disappeared and been replaced by the most recent response. I would prefer to see both emails as separate notifications, and I feel as though it used to function like that.

Does anyone know of a way to enable keeping ALL emails via notifications? That is primarily how I check my inbox, not by going into the app manually.

Thank you

Poor Verizon Service After Storm?

I live in Uptown, but have noticed poor Verizon service throughout Chicago ever since the major wind storm a few weeks ago. I used to have full bars in my building, and as I type this, I only have 2. Yesterday while walking to the train, I had zero bars for the first time ever!

Has anyone else noticed this with Verizon specifically? I am wondering if any cell towers or those rooftop 5G antennas were damaged. Gauging public sentiment before I call Verizon directly. Thank you.

Swimming in Lake Michigan after heavy rainfall in Chicago?

New resident, I was planning to go to the beach tomorrow afternoon, but now I’m not so sure with all the heavy rain tonight. With Chicago’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) system, what are your thoughts on swimming in Lake Michigan after a heavy rainfall? I have seen baby wipes on the shore before…in Miami Beach, we didn’t swim a few days after heavy rain because of street runoff. Is that an issue here as well?

I am aware that the Chicago Park District tests for e-coli daily, and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District maintains a map of CSO discharge events:

Stores/places that feel like you’re stepping back in time?

I recently started watching The Gilded Age and I’m looking for stores/places that feel like you’re stepping back into the “Golden Age” of Chicago, the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s. Any suggestions? Thank you
