Are you taking your thiamin (vitamin B1)?

Are you taking your thiamin (vitamin B1)?

The recommended 1.4-1.5 mg of thiamin during pregnancy is not enough if you have HG or are carrying multiples.

Thiamin is not a treatment for Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), but it sometimes helps symptoms. Even if thiamin does not improve your symptoms, you need to take it to protect your heart and brain and baby(s)' development.

What does our community say is the hardest part of getting others to believe how sick they were? What would you add?

HG Survivor, Cyprus: I was told it was psychological, even by nurses at the hospital. My mother in law also suggested that I “work and vomit in between lessons.” I could hardly stand or move without vomiting.

Nepheteria, South Carolina, USA: The hardest part was feeling like I had to convince everyone as if it was an interrogation! The snarky remarks , the “no ways,” being called “lazy,” it was all really tough. Honestly, it felt like nobody wanted to understand. They just kept acting like I was making up excuses.

HG Survivor, Texas, USA: The hardest part is the uncertainty and self-doubt. I struggled with feeling like my body was betraying me and wondering what I was doing wrong. I felt like I had to prove and justify my sickness added to the pain of the nausea and vomiting itself.

HG Survivor, Scotland: The judgement and lack of help. I was barely surviving and each time I had HG, my support was low, I was treated like I was just being weak.

Phoebi, Ohio, USA: The hardest part was not being able to advocate for myself. Simply having no energy to try to convince anyone into believing me. Every time I would try to explain how hard HG was and I couldn’t even drink a sip of water, I would get interrupted with home remedies.

If severe vomiting and dehydration happened outside of pregnancy, no one would call it “normal.” Yet during pregnancy, it’s often dismissed. This leaves HG patients to suffer unnecessarily, both physically and emotionally. Not being believed can contribute to trauma.

That's why our Support Program is designed to meet the needs of women and their families, including trauma support. You are not alone. Our live HG Trauma Support group meets on Monday, May 4th. Check for local times and register: hyperemesis.org/event/hg-trauma-support-group-may-2026

We believe in a future where pregnancy is no longer a battle to be fought, and families don’t have to face the trauma of Hyperemesis Gravidarum. It’s past time to Believe Us!

For 26 years, the HER Foundation has been supporting HG moms and has helped over 3 million people.

The 2026 international theme is “Believe Us." For us, this means trusting patients when they say they are suffering and recognizing that Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a serious, life-altering illness, not just morning sickness. Listening and validating experiences leads to earlier care, better outcomes, and less isolation for those affected.

It’s not morning sickness. It’s Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG).

Q: Why does awareness matter?
A: Because being believed leads to earlier diagnosis, better treatment, and less suffering. Believe us!

When you support the HER Foundation (sharing this post, donating to our mission, telling your story), you are supporting families facing HG.
