For ten years… I was the "Self-Made" daughter. When I got into my dream school, my parents sat me down with very long faces. They told me they had zero dollars to help with tuition. They said, "Sloane, we’re just scraping by. You’re so strong… you’ll figure it out."

So, I did. I worked three jobs, lived on generic peanut butter, and took out massive loans. I spent my twenties in a basement apartment that smelled like damp cardboard just to pay it all back.

My brother, Leo? He is the "Free Spirit." He spent his twenties "finding himself" on my parents' couch while they paid for his car, his insurance, and his organic kale.

Last Thanksgiving, I’m at their place in the suburbs. Mom asks me to help her set up her new iPad. A notification pops up from a high-yield savings account. The balance? Ninety-eight thousand dollars.

The name on the account? "Leo’s Future."

I felt the blood go cold in my veins. I looked at my dad, who was busy complaining about the price of gas, and I realized… they didn't lack the money. They just didn't think I was worth the investment.

I didn't cause a scene. I didn't even mention the iPad. I just waited until Monday morning.

See… I am a C-P-A. And I have been doing my parents' taxes for free since I graduated. I knew their passwords. I knew their signatures. And I knew they had been claiming me as a "dependent" for three years after I moved out… just to save themselves a few grand.

I called the I-R-S. I filed an anonymous tip about their "creative" accounting.

Then, I sent a text to the family group chat. "Hey Leo… hope you enjoy the inheritance… because the government is about to take a huge bite out of it."

I blocked them all before the first "How could you?" text could even land.

They wanted me to be self-made? Well… mission accomplished.
