I just tore down my FN4A-EL after it started spraying transmission fluid out of the bellhousing every time I started the car.
After opening it up, I found the front pump bushing was completely shot — it was so loose I could spin it and pull it out with my finger. Because it was running low on fluid, the direct clutch hub and drum are burnt, along with the clutch packs.
Surprisingly, everything else looks to be in pretty good shape and should clean up fine.
Right now I’m planning on ordering a full rebuild kit (clutch packs, O-rings, gaskets, band, filter), plus:
- New front pump bushing
- Torque converter
- Converter seal
I can find a replacement direct clutch drum without too much trouble, but the hub is giving me problems. I’ve only found a couple options — one from overseas (Ukraine/Slovakia), and another that honestly looks about as worn as mine.
I have found some full clutch/tail cover drum assemblies that could be an alternative. My reverse drum actually looks to be in better shape than the ones in those assemblies, so I’m thinking I could mix and match parts to build one good usable setup if needed.
Before I pull the trigger, is there anything else you’d recommend replacing while I’m in here? Any better sources for parts or specific kits you trust?
Appreciate any advice.
