First Iceland Ring Road Trip — Do We Really Need AWD, or Will a Small FWD Car Survive Our Rookie Energy?
Hi fellow travel experts! My wife and I (M32 & F30) are currently deep in Iceland trip planning mode and could really use some advice from people with actual experience driving there.
We’re planning our first Iceland trip for late August to mid-September (our last possible day in Iceland would be around September 25th). The plan is a pretty classic 13-day Ring Road trip — nothing too adventurous, no hardcore F-roads, and honestly… we’re not exactly rally drivers either.
Our rough route looks like this:
Keflavík → Golden Circle → South Iceland (Vík) → Höfn → Eastfjords → North Iceland (Mývatn) → Húsavík → Akureyri → Snæfellsnes Peninsula → Reykjavík
Now we’re stuck on the eternal Iceland rental car question:
Do we really need an AWD/4WD vehicle, or would a smaller FWD car be enough?
We were originally thinking of something small and budget-friendly, like a Toyota Aygo or Yaris. But then the internet started whispering scary things about Icelandic wind, gravel roads, weather mood swings, and suddenly we’re looking at SUVs like the Vitara, RAV4, or Sportage.
The price difference is pretty significant, though — going with a smaller 2WD car could save us around €500–800 total, which is definitely not a tiny amount for us.
Since we’re:
- staying on the main Ring Road,
- not planning to drive F-roads,
- travelling in late summer/early autumn,
- and are relatively novice Iceland drivers,
Would a small FWD car realistically be enough? Or is AWD/4WD one of those things people never regret paying extra for in Iceland?
Also happy to hear any “I wish I knew this before renting a car in Iceland” advice .Thanks a lot in advance!
