Hi all! I recently (as in two days ago) got my grandma’s bernina sewing machine. She purchased it new between 2000-2001 (my dad can’t remember) and used it up until her death in February 2023. No one knew my uncle still had it until his death last month, but I’ve been reading and toying with it for the last couple of days.

As stated in my title, the bobbin thread is showing on top of my stitching. I’ll attach a photo. I have new white thread as my top thread but the bobbin is brown thread she had been using.

I am very very new to sewing at 30 years old. Grandma tried to teach me when I was probably 10, but it didn’t take and she never tried again. I wish I had asked again, but alas, here we are.

Things I have tried:

  1. Cleaned the machine
  2. Bobbin thread tension—I did actually have the bobbin in the bobbin case incorrectly, but this didn’t not fix my problem
  3. I have rethreaded the top thread, but I’m not confident that I did it correctly. I followed the guides and the presser foot was up while doing it.
  4. Adjusted thread tension (I’ve tried every tension possible)

I have read that I could try a new needle. I have no clue how much she used the needle that’s on it, but obviously it’s still over three years old since it’s been that long since she passed. Is there anything else that I should try? The nearest Bernina dealer to me is 2 hours, but I will gladly go there if this problem is beyond my ability to fix.

(Please note—I have the machine, the case for it, and one presser foot. All of her accessories, threads, extra bobbins, etc are gone, I’m sure when her home was cleaned out. I’m currently trying to replace things. The presser foot on it now is 20–open embroidery foot)
