76/100 From A Buick 8

This book proves once again that King is an excellent story teller.
Could someone else make this story as appealing? I’m not sure.
Was this only a good story because I think of King as a great story teller? Possibly.
Was it interesting? Very.
Would I recommend it? Yes.
Will I ever read it again? Not likely.

75/100 Naked Prey

Another great Davenport. Still really enjoying this series.
I like how logical the series of events to finding the killer are. There are certainly some coincidental events that help the stories along, but for the most part it seems like logical problem solving. I like that.
I also like how easily Sandford throws in a paragraph or page of comical relief or just distraction from the main story in without it feeling like a waste of pages.

Big connection made in this one that I know grows in the later books, so I’m excited to see how it continues

74/100 The Widow

Full disclosure, before last year I only read a few books a year and they were almost entirely John Grisham. I’ve been a huge fan for many years.

That said, I feel his books have really been hit or miss lately. I would put this firmly in the middle.

It had a very slow start and a very quick end. Saved in the middle by courtroom drama which his early books did so well.

This one saved me from writing off his new books, but solidified my decision to stop buying them new. His next one will be a library read.

73/100 Secondhand Souls

I would say this is a pretty typical sequel.
By that I mean, if you enjoyed the first, you’ll probably enjoy the second, but it’s not as good as the first.
The first 4/5ths or so were just as fun and entertaining as the first book, but the end felt rushed, like let’s just wrap this up.
Which, honestly isn’t that different from the first.
Moore is now firmly in my list of authors to read more. According to this sub, Lamb should definitely be next.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads. I hope you’re doing all the weird dad stuff you can on your day, like karate in the backyard.

72/100 The Antique Hunter’s Guide to Murder

Deep sigh…ok so this wasn’t a bad book, but it was kind of annoying.

First off, the main character tells us they suffered some terrible wrongdoing 20 years ago that derailed her whole life and she desperately misses the person she used to be and how sad her life is now.

What makes it annoying is at the half way mark of the book, we still have no idea what this wrongdoing is and she has continued to whine about this changed life on almost every….single….page.

On top of that, about the same time, this book literally turns into Clue. All these new people show up in an isolated location and someone is a killer. There’s even a candlestick.

The second half of the book is so much better and more interesting it almost saved that whole book, except the reveal was almost too slow burn and a little confusing. Plus, we went out of our way to tie off one loose end, but just left all the rest a mystery.

71/100 Bad Monkey

I would put this firmly in the good, not great category.
If I found it on my own, I probably would like it more, problem is I saw it recommended as “fucking hilarious”. This book is not fucking hilarious.
But it’s good. I’ll definitely read another Hiaasen.
My complaint about this book is the spacing. What I mean by that is: parts of it ended early and the “what happens next” went on too long, parts of it ended very quickly without much “what happened next” at all, and then multiple times something rather important happened just in a paragraph with no page break or chapter end, just like it happened in passing. Like wait did I read that right?
Anyways, good not great. Would still recommend.
