How do you program a key fob? Is the dealership a scam?
I have a 2015 Chevy Malibu, it needs a new key fob. The key still works but the buttons, as you can see, are gone. There’s these kiosks in the grocery store where you can order a new one and program it yourself, but it cost $100 and they ship they key to your house. I looked on Amazon they sell a 2 pack for $20. Only problem is I’m struggling to find a place that will just cut the key for me without buying the key from them as well. There’s one dealership that said they’ll cut it for me for $30 and no appointment, but that one is 12miles away and I’m lazy. So I called one closer but the tech said that I’d have to make an appointment and the programming alone cost $220. I asked him “can I just program it myself, I looked it up it doesn’t seem no need any special equipment”? He said “I don’t know about that, we hook it up to a computer and tell it it’s getting a new key”. What is the truth here, the internet tells me all I gotta do is put my old key in turn it, then put the new one in and turn it. (Depending on where you look I also found on a Chevy forum that you ave to hold the lock button too.) I honestly didn’t like dudes tone but maybe he’s right? What do I know, I just need a straight answer. I’m not trying to act like I know better than the mechanic, I just don’t wanna be scammed out of $220. Ace hardware said the would do it for $90. I’m not sure if that key has the remote unlock/lock on it.
