recs for best used cars 2026 for reliability and lower long term ownership costs?
i’m planning to replace my current car sometime this year and have been trying to narrow down good used options, but the deeper i get into researching the more overwhelmed i feel. every model seems to either have people praising it for reliability or warning about one expensive issue that completely ruins ownership later on.
my main priorities are reliability, reasonable maintenance costs, decent fuel economy, and something comfortable enough for daily driving. i care way more about avoiding constant repairs than having the newest tech or the fastest car. i’d probably keep the car for several years, so long term ownership costs matter a lot.
budget is roughly in the $15k to $25k range depending on mileage and condition. i’m open to sedans, hatchbacks, or smaller suvs. mostly city/highway commuting with occasional longer drives. no kids currently, so i dont necessarily need a huge vehicle.
right now i keep bouncing between the usual reliable recommendations and trying to figure out whether some models are overpriced simply because everybody recommends them now.
for people here who’ve bought used cars recently, what ended up being the smartest purchase for you? and are there any specific models or years you’d strongly recommend avoiding based on long term ownership experience?
