Gmail username already in use, but no Google account associated with the address
I'm trying to set up a Gmail account, but am running into a weird loop.
I've made a Google account with my desired username. It was given a (string of numbers)@id.gle email address.
I have never heard of this domain, but that could be because I'm not the most tech savvy person. Anyway, I then went to the account settings, to claim my (desired username)@gmail.com address. However, when I enter the desired username I get an error message "This username is already being used, try one of these suggestions instead".
So, I thought that perhaps I already claimed the account a couple of years ago. I log out from the new account and try to login to the (desired username)@gmail.com account. To my surprise I get an error saying there's no account with this name ("Can't find this account"). And there's no option to reset my password or start account recovery from that screen.
I've also tried the "Help me with account recovery" option directly, and again it says "Failed to locate account /
We can't find a Google Account associated with (desired username)@gmail.com". And then I can't proceed at all, so that is also a dead end.
Since the username I'm trying to claim is the name of my own (very small) business*, adding numbers or dashes to the username is not something I would prefer to do.
Is there a glitch going on at the moment?
And is there some way I can contact a helpdesk at Gmail/Google to help me solve this?
*All accounts mentioned are personal/private accounts, not the 'for work or business' accounts, since I don't need the Workspace.
