How reliable is the BYD Song Plus 1.5L DM-i in the long run?

Hi everyone,

I'm seriously considering buying a BYD Song Plus 1.5L DM-i, but my biggest concern is long-term reliability.

I'd love to hear from owners who have had the car for a while, especially those with 30,000 km, 50,000 km, 100,000 km+, or anyone who has owned it for a while.

A few things I'm curious about:Has the DM-i hybrid system been reliable?

  • Any issues with the engine, battery, transmission, or electric motors?
  • Have you experienced any software problems?
  • How expensive has maintenance been?
  • Any recurring faults or things I should know before buying?

I'm looking for honest experiences both positive and negative. Thanks in advance!

BYD owners, do you think a screen protector is actually useful for the infotainment screen?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been looking into BYD accessories and noticed there are quite a few screen protectors for the center display.

For owners here, do you think a screen protector is actually worth it, or is the screen fine without one?

Mainly wondering about fingerprints, glare, scratches, and whether the rotating screen makes installation annoying.

Also curious if anyone here has bought one already did it help, or was it unnecessary?

Thanks.

Calculated vs real distance

My SL7 Excellence is telling me that with 95% of 91,3kWh battery I have 478 km. This is 18kWh/100km. But calculating with average consuption which is 23.4 kWh/100 km it is only 370km.

What is your experience?

I became part of the family

Seal 5 DM-I, my first non-ICE car.

I am really satisfied with how good this car is. I only need to check out the highway, how he will behave, but its great for city driving.

Euro Roadtrip notes incoming

Following last year’s success in driving From Edinburgh to Tuscany and back in our Seal U DM-i Boost, we decided to shake things up this year and head for Denmark and Sweden, using the ferry route between Newcastle and Amsterdam.

We’re back and, as the trip notes from last year seemed reasonably popular, I’ll pull together some driving observations and pics and post here, in the coming days.

Question for uk owners of Atto 2

I’ve just ordered a new Atto2 comfort and have read that the 2025 model came with fixed headrest, can anyone with an Atto2 comfort confirm if they have adjustable or fixed headrest. I’ve informed the dealer I want a 26 model as he says there’s no difference.

BYD Seal Niggles

I've driven my BYD Seal AWD (530 PS) for about 22,000 km in a tropical climate (32–42°C). And I have two niggles that constantly nags me.

The AC cools the cabin well, but during sudden downpour the windows fog up easily.

  1. I always leave the climate control on auto-21c sync-fresh air mode and it does a great job of cooling down the cabin most of the time. With that being said, it doesn't seem to distribute airflow effectively. Is there a way for it to automatically alternate airflow (e.g., windscreen and footwell) whilst preventing the window from fogging up at the same time?
  2. My previous car figured my niggles already (Intensive/max auto at 20+18.5c, auto recirculation). In addition, is it only me or seal's fans are noticeably loud above speed 3? Also I think rear B-pillar vents would have been a nice addition to diffuse the air to rear passengers too.

Auto headlights sensitivity, or lack thereof.

  1. In my head the Seal's automatic headlights seem to have a mind of its own. They fired up instantly under a dense tree or into the shade, yet switches off too early at dawn and come on WAY far too late at dusk. My previous car also senses when the sun is low on the horizon and turns on the headlights to improve visibility and now it is something I can't live without. Any way to recalibrate the sensor's sensitivity?
  2. How can a car this calibre sans cornering lights? A vw golf from prehistoric era has a simple alternating fog lights to light up a dark junction.

Here's Seal's headlights logic

  • Driving at dawn, sunrise at around 6am. (main beam off max at 6.15, should be 7?)
  • Driving at dusk, sunset at 6pm. (main beam turns on at 5.40, should be at 5??)
  • Sun blazing low from behind, main beam off. Can't see anything in the mirror.
  • Entering a tunnel, turns on late, turns off right when you exit it.
  • Big trees, main beam on, WHY?
  • Office district with tall buildings and the car is under the shade, again main beams on.
  • It does not turn on immediately in rain huh?

I don't think I ever changed any of my car's climate control nor headlights switch for almost a decade before, now sometimes I feel like I almost need to intervene lol. First world problems I know.

Aircon After rapid charging?

Thought the aircon had broken on my dolphin surf (aka Seagul/Atto1) as it was hardly cooling the cabin at all, but I think it's related to rapid charging as after about 30mins it started working again. So i'm not sure if it's a problem or it's just being diverted by the BMS to cool the battery after the rapid charging session.

I suspect I was going quite hard on the battery as it was a fairly long journey with most of it at highway/motorway speeds.

So Now i'm not sure if it's a fault/low gas pressure or if it's just normal as no errors were displayed or anything.

Atto2 v2.2.0 speed warning

Hi, car updated, now when you start, the button for disabling the speed warning on the quick links pull down screen is off, but the car honks when you pass the limit. So now I have to click the lane assist off as before, but switch the speed limit "on" (even though it's on in reality) and then off the confirm, annoying me even more that EU nonsense safety is forced upon me but now needs another click .

Anyone else seen this?

Weird installation choice for Dashcam option

Hi folks, I bought my SL7 a few months back and got the dashcam option available from my dealership. It came with a Gnet G-ON4 and a Blackvue B-130A battery pack.

I never bothered to find where the battery pack was installed, just never thought anything of it. But I've got to clean under the seats today and this is what I see (it's under the passenger side seat, UNDER the floor mat, blocking the vent).

This seems like a really lazy install to be honest. Have others had an installation look like this? Would relocation be easy?

A grinding noise when you brake isn't normal

So, into my 2nd year with my dolphin and about 2 months after i bought the car, i noticed when i broke that the car would make a grinding noise. i hadn't owned an EV before so i enquired about this with the dealer. they told me it was normal.

It absolutely isn't. The grinding noise got allot more pronounced about 2 months ago and i brought it in to be looked at. Apparently, it's the wheels themselves. Both sets of tires were replaced, and now the noise is completely gone.
