I survived domestic violence. Medicaid care nearly broke me.

Fourteen years ago, domestic violence left me paralyzed from the neck down. Becoming a quadriplegic changed every part of my life, but I fought to survive and rebuild.
What I wasn’t prepared for was how hard it would be to survive the system meant to support people with severe disabilities.
I depend on caregivers for nearly every part of daily life. When shifts are canceled or no one shows up, I can’t get out of bed, eat, use the bathroom, make appointments, or stay safe. Low wages and chronic understaffing leave agencies scrambling, and I live with the constant fear that essential care will disappear without warning.
I’ve filed grievances, made countless phone calls, and advocated for myself, but it often feels like I’m fighting a system that doesn’t truly understand what it means to depend on someone else for every basic need.
Surviving domestic violence was one battle. Surviving the Medicaid system has been another.
I’m sharing my story because I know I’m not the only person living this reality. People with severe disabilities deserve reliable care, caregivers deserve fair wages, and no one should have to fear being abandoned because the system is underfunded or understaffed.
Has anyone else experienced caregiver shortages or struggled to get the support you need through Medicaid? How have you dealt with it? I’d really like to hear your experiences.
