Gen 1 sounds a little squirrelly, is this normal?

Hello hello,

Might be a little hard to hear in the video.

When cold starting I can hear it the most, but also when giving it throttle. Just sounds a little scrappy, towards the exhaust it just sounds very metallic? Is this a symptom of a maintenance issue that I should urgently investigate, or does it sound normal to you guys?

Attached a video of it starting and giving it throttle, the squeaky sound shows up very accurate to reality.

Car play vs gps unit?

Hey all, just wondering what you guys recommend over a car play type unit that gives would mirror maps off my phone vs a proper dedicated GPS unit. It seems like it's really cheap and simple to get something that's car play like, I'm guessing the 30$ AliExpress special would be good enough. I mainly just want to be able to have a display of maps/directions to make life simpler. But since I plan on doing adv riding, I'm guessing I will be in places where my phone cuts out and maybe a dedicated map system would be better then. But it seems like I would have to pay for a separate service to use maps on a Garmin GPS, if I'm reading right.

So what's your experience? Was it useful having a dedicated GPS system, or not really any different than just something mirroring your phone? Is the utility worth the extra cost?

[Tenant US-OR] Being Charged Rent After I Vacate, Among Other Legal Questions.

Hello,

I have a bit of a question, mainly wondering if anyone in Oregon or Portland area has had a similar experience here. I'm mainly trying to get opinions for of this is worth legal fees to pursue some of this nonsense. I've looked around a little and this seems to be a unique situation.

I had several instances of theft at my apartment, and when I tried contacting management for security camera footage, because there are several cameras and numerous signs around the parking lot, and they told me they don't have any cameras. I was rather upset about this, the most they told me is they would let the property owners know I wanted cameras. I was told the parking lot was under surveillance when I signed on. When I spoke with my neighbors, they all were under the impression they were real as well. I've had about 3k in stolen and damaged property and no lead at all because without cameras police and insurance told me to kick rocks.

The most recent theft was at the end of June. While going back and forth with management about how the camera are still fake and I had more theft because of this, I asked what the process is to make sure they knew I wasn't interested in renewing my lease and would be moving out and of July. The lease was from 01 August25 to July 31 26, in my understanding the lease would end there regardless. They didn't reply to me until two days later and didn't tell me that a formal written notice was required nor how or where to submit it. I found a function on the app used for paying rent to submit notice of vacating without their help.

Because this was sent on July 3rd they're charging me ~100$ of prorated rent for the first two days of August. I think this is a little ridiculous. I requested information of this process in a timely manner, during business hours, they choose not to respond and now I'm being charged for it. It really adds insult to injury considering the personal cost I had from all the theft.

As I started packing my things, I found a leak in the closest wall and reported it to maintenance immediately. Maintenance guy just painted over some of the mold, and told me it's a design flaw with the building and every room has the same issue, it's a known problem with the building. Great. Pretty obviously this was not the first time the leak was just caulked over and mold painted. So I had to rush packing everything, because hell nah I'm not interested in Ethan Winters maxxing.

Along the way, I get the move out letter check list, which included this line

"Your home was professionally cleaned (and carpets were professionally cleaned if applicable) prior to move in. The home will be professionally cleaned after move out and the cost will be deducted from your security deposit."

Now, my admittedly limited understanding of the law is as follows:

  1. charging rent after lease ends is not allowed

  2. the land lord is required to reach out 60 days before the lease ends to negotiate renewing the lease. This never occured

  3. lying to tenants about security cameras could be considered false advertising

  4. known issues with the building design causing mold growth are not acceptable, and need more attention then just painting over it.

  5. the law only permits charging for cleaning of extraordinary uncleanliness and "professional carpet cleaning", not the full hourly rate of whatever they're ordering

Now my main question is this

To anyone that's been in a similar situation, was lawyering up worthwhile? I'm worried about spending out my ass on legal help and it going nowhere.

Also, if there are any lawyers around here, what legal obligation is there for management to respond to requests about terminating the lease? It seems really sketchy to me that they would take forever to respond then charge me for it.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks all for reading.

So that's burnt right?

My rough guess is that it's probably full enough but it does seem excessively burnt, right? New to me bike, last oil change was in April according to inherited owners manual. I just flushed and refilled the radiator but the engine still seems to get quite hot after some light riding, i figured it would stay colder but this is my first serious bike, am I just under estimating what normal should be?

Gen 1 Turn signal replacement

Hey all

Do you guys keep the stock blinkers?

These things look huge and ridiculous, is there a regulation requiring them to be sticking out so far?

One of mine is busted up and the relay makes a winding sound when I switch to the right side, where the damaged one is. I'm guessing there's a shorted wire under the field repair.

Any recommendations for replacement blinkers that are more sleek looking?

Boot recommendations!

Hello everyone,

I'm having a hard time understanding the differences between boots for bikes. I understand that for enduro riding it's important to have boots that go up your calf, and it needs to have a sturdy hinge on the ankle to protect all that stuff.

I'm not really sure what I should be looking for in slide protection on the sides, I assumed that would be a more obvious feature.

I've tried on tech 3s and 5s and thought they were comfortable, and some O'Neal's. I have wider feet but sizing up to 11s works. I like how the sidi crossair looks too.

In general, I'd like to hear some opinions on good proper boots that offer better protection and what features make or break a boot. Personally I really don't care for Gore-Tex, just makes my feet stink. I believe this will be a buy once cry once item so I like researching a lot before opening my wallet, but would prefer to stay under 400$ or get used

If anyone here has worn a variety of boots I'd love to hear from you! I'll probably be riding 80/20 streets/dirt, the trails I'd be on will be hairy and I don't want to blow my ankle apart. I'd also likely do a bit of walking around for fishing/hiking/shooting between rides. I've read it's better to pack different shoes for that, if anyone has more thoughts I'd like to hear.

edit: I absolutely intend to get MX specific boots to be clear. I more so I'm wondering what features for MX boots should I make sure are present to guarantee safety and what are more important

Gen 1 choke confusion

Hello,

I picked up a Gen 1 (2000) klr this week.

The choke lever is not present. The cable is present.

It starts up cold just fine. This makes me suspicious that the carb was tuned to run rich to get around the missing hardware. It feels like it got a little toasty when I was riding around the neighborhood. I can see some black stuff on the rear fender and muffler but I don't know how old that is.

I plan on replacing all the fluids next time I ride bc I saw the temp get pretty high, I'm not too sure where it should be sitting but it wasn't going lower than halfway.

So my question for you all, should I give the carb a look over? Are there other ways to verify if it's running rich? Should it be impossible to cold start the bike without the choke? Or will it be as simple as installing a replacement lever and forgetting about it?

Also if anyone could point me towards the mixture screw, that would be appreciated!

Gen 1 KLR vs every else

Hello all,

TLDR: any advice or knowledge from riders of a Gen 1 KLR or a guerilla 450 about how they handle?

I'm currently deciding between my next bike and also my first bigger bike and first one built after the Reagan administration.

I'm looking at various Gen 1 KLR650s in the 15-30k mile range mostly in great condition. I love the old look of them, really not a fan of the fair on the other gens so only interested in the Gen 1. These tend to be in the 1.5-3k price range

I also could afford a new bike by trading in my current bike and financing it. I've looked at a new DRZ4, G310 and some other at a power sport dealer and thought they were alright. I really loved the look and feel of the Vettore 450, Guerilla 450 and the Himalayan (both gens). Also find their price point attractive.

Some background, I would be using the bike to commute to school and work probably 70% of the time. I go camping a lot and want a better bike to take for camping trips instead of loading one onto a truck, and do a decent amount of unimproved trail riding in the forests and mountains around Oregon. Previous bikes I've owned have been a GT185, CT110, and SP370. I've used the gt185 as a camping bike so I'm not unfamiliar with using something more meant for street riding for a bit of off roading. Also clearly I really like working on older bikes but I'm also a big fan of things working.

I'd really like to know if anyone here has modified a guerilla 450 to be better suited for trails/wild roads, or in general if anyone uses it like that. Also any information from someone that's ridden a klr and some of the other bikes I mentioned, if you could give any information about how they compare or any information about your experience I would greatly appreciate it! I mostly just find stuff comparing the different generations of klr or similar sized engines. Information about how well they handle luggage and a passenger would be appreciated!

Thank you all

Stolen package, has anyone recovered one?

Hey all, I had a motorcycle part stolen off my doormat.

I can't imagine whoever took it will have any use for a cylinder head from a bike with such a short production period. I don't really have any way to just get another one either. I'm kinda fucked here

I imagine whoever took it would take it to a pawnshop or a metal scrapper to try getting money off it. I'm hoping if I contact these businesses and let them know about it what are the chances I could recover it before it's destroyed? And what metal scrapper would take a random bike engine part?

I don't know if it's worth filing a police report, has anyone ever had their stuff recovered from filing a report?
