Hiya,
I’ve been getting quotes for a new roof including chimney removal.
One company has suggested that, rather than just removing the chimney stack from roof level, they would also remove the chimney breast within the attic entirely, down to attic floor / bedroom ceiling level, instead of leaving it just below roof height.
Their reasoning is that the chimney breast currently sits more centrally within the attic rather than at the end of the property, and removing it fully would allow for better use of storage space once the loft is boarded.
My questions are:
- Is it worth paying nearly £5k extra compared to the other quotes to remove the chimney breast to this level?
- Would the roof and the remaining chimney breasts in the bedrooms and living areas be structurally sound if it’s taken down to attic floor level, or could this cause issues such as movement or subsidence in the future?
- If I decided to remove the chimney breasts from the bedrooms and living spaces at a later date, would RSJs still be required to support the structure if the chimney has already been removed from the top of the house downward?
Thanks 😅
