Question about feeding chicken necks to indoor cats

I’m pleased that my kitten, Nora, is a chewer and enjoys the chew sticks I give her(especially silver vine sticks), but I haven’t tried giving her a raw chicken neck yet. I found a store that has a butcher section that sells them(it’s oddly difficult to find chicken necks at stores around here, even at the meat or butcher counters).

My biggest question is, how do you give them to cats indoors without it making a mess? Do you put down a towel or have a specific area to give it to them? Dogs I know you can have them eat it outside, but I can’t really do that with my cat for various reasons(like the fact she wouldn’t care what food is in front of her while outside).

Progress on switching my kitten to raw

I’m currently working on switching her to 2 meals a day. Since I got this crate from a friend to take her to get spayed, I have been feeding her in there so she doesn’t get distracted(thank you whoever suggested it!) and I put her bowl with the unfinished portion in a bag in the fridge to give her the next meal when she doesn’t finish. Already saw some results with her eating a larger portion for dinner. She freaks out and doesn‘t eat if the crate door is closed tho, so it’s left open.

Previously, I was using Lotus, but decided to try Smallbatch next. I mixed a patty with some wet food and probiotics. I will probably be doing partial canned food or full canned meals for a bit though since I have a lot, but being able to incorporate raw into her diet has been a nice step-up in nutrition.

Edit: looks like this recall is from February, so not super recent.

Sharing a success!

Today was the first time I didn’t have to put the food back in the fridge since usually she only eats half a portion at a time. Today Nora had small bit of wet food from yesterday, with the rest being beef Lotus raw, and consumed almost everything. I did some familiar wet food with it since she hasn’t had beef raw before and can be skeptical or cautious with unfamiliar flavors.

I’ll try doing a full raw portion tonight and see how it goes. Thanks for the help so far, everyone!

Frustrations about all the human stuff

I wasn’t excited about the legos and toys, but it was a random cart and not too much space was dedicated to it. (Though having to try and recover the animal figurines, which were always being moved around by children playing with them, was a task one had to dedicate a whole shift to).

The seasonal definitely-not-AI shirts were random, but at least those were seasonal and the wall could go back to having regular pet products on it.

The peeps and Bluey pez next to the register had me baffled more than anything.

But the whole “My Human” wall is such a massive waste of space. The store I’m at is pretty limited in space and we can’t carry a lot of things I wish we could. No stuff for plants, no space for all those displaced products that suddenly found themselves homeless after the reset that added like 3 new foods to the cat section. Just a big Petco-Below wall.

The worst part is that there is a Five Below RIGHT NEXT DOOR. I’ve also noticed more people asking if we carry certain random human products, like today I was asked if we carry paper plates. I of course politely told them that those are something you’ll find next door.

Nora’s first frozen raw: Success!

Nora’s first time with frozen raw! I’m using Lotus Turkey(the darker portion) recipe and a familiar chicken wet food I keep in rotation. At first, she just went for her usual, but eventually, she tried the raw and really seemed to enjoy it!

She also just went to the bathroom and her stool looks nice and solid. I’ll still have to adjust how much I give her at once since she doesn’t like to eat more than like 40-60 calories in a sitting, and will leave stuff to come back to later. Obviously, I can’t leave out raw too long so I will need to figure out how much she’s willing to eat of it in a sitting.

Speaking of which, how long can I leave raw food out and let her come back to it?

Thanks for all of your helpful advice in starting my girl on the quality of diet she deserves!

Hopefully not an add question about probiotics

Before starting my girl on small amounts of raw, I‘m going to get a probiotic supplement for her tomorrow to make things easier on her stomach. What bacteria should I look for in probiotic blends.

I’m not asking for specific brands mainly because I’ll be picking some up right after work as it’s the only time I can this week, and so the exact brands people use may or may not be available at the big-box pet-store that is open late. And I refuse to use Purina products on principle, so no FortiFlora. There used to be a brand that used the exact probiotic in the same amounts as FortiFlora, even saying to compare them lol, but they mysteriously never got any more shipments of it in. Basically a cheaper “generic” version. Definitely no suspicious meddling there.

Anyways, what are the good digestive bacteria to look for? Some supplements also have added fibers like pumpkin or psyllium husk- are those also helpful? Hoping this isn’t too odd of a question for this sub. Any info or even studies, if you want to go that far or have any on-hand, would be greatly appreciate.

Edit: Ended up with Fera Pet probiotic, which seems pretty well-regarded from what I can tell.

Nora’s first raw meal

I realized that I had a trial pack of cat Stella and Chewy’s from a bit ago. Figured it was a good time to introduce her to raw using it. It’s different from frozen raw, but still very different from canned.

She seems to be unsure about it. She did eat a few bites, but lost interest. I’ll keep encouraging her.

New Kitten and I need advice on good raw brands for her

Nora is a 6 month old kitten and will eat literally anything, so no pickiness issues. I want to try her on partial raw, but also want to make sure that I pick a commercial diet that is reliable enough nutrient-wise to give to a growing kitten. Especially so, since she could stand to gain a little weight and is the smallest of her litter. She’s currently a bit under 7lbs according to my kitchen scale(which isn’t very accurate as it’s not for weighing animals or larger weights). I’ve found that it ends up higher than her actual weight since it is higher than with the vet(in which she stood pretty still for)

So, anyway, I just want to incorporate a bit of raw into her diet, especially since she’s more “my” cat than a “family” cat. I’m in Northern California. I just wanna know what you all think are good options specifically for kittens. I might be overly cautious, but it’s because I want to do right by her.

I’ve seen a lot of lists online liking Viva, but I’ve seen a lot of complaints recently.
