First post here. I am doing some research for a fictional story set in 2014, 2015.

The main character is a person in exile from a repressive regime. They need to stay in contact and connect with others from the same regime and do so virtually. Protecting identities is the most important part.

At that time, which were some of the more secure virtual communication tools? Signal is not an option as it was so newly launched, proton is also not an option.

I have kind of run into a bit of a wall here.
